Fit Without Limits: Wearable Customization through Human-Centered Parametric Design

This session introduces a new design method centered on a parametric design to revolutionize the creation of custom-fit wearable products. By integrating the 3D body scan technology, parametric and algorithmic modeling, and hybrid digital fabrications, this method challenges the traditional sizing systems and fitting strategies, advancing towards the vision of Mass Customization and Design Democratization.

Yuanqing Tian will share her research with relevant case studies on adaptive bras, personalized eyewear, customized respirators and hand splints, alongside teaching outcomes within design education. This research aims to improve fit and comfort for a wide range of human populations, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in health and wellness.

The presentation will also explore potential applications for underrepresented body profiles and medical conditions, such as post-mastectomy recovery for breast cancer survivors. Attendees will gain insight into a scalable, data-driven design pipeline of customization design solutions, offering both technical depth and human-centered impact.
