Greg Smiley, IDSA

Industrial Design Manager, The Raymond Corporation and Head of Industrial Design, TMHNA Greg Smiley, IDSA, is the Head of Industrial Design at Toyota Material Handling North America, Industrial Design Manager at Raymond, and has served as IDSA Syracuse Chapter Chair since 2007. Born and raised in New York’s Hudson Valley, Smiley is a 1987 ID graduate of the University of Bridgeport and completed additional course work in human factors at the University of Michigan. Smiley coordinates global integration, oversight and advocacy for the styling, ergonomics, interaction (UI/UX) and concept development of both Toyota and Raymond branded forklifts and other material handling products, working at the technology forefront in AI, VR, Automation, Telematics, Robotics and Energy Systems.  He represents ID interests in global development projects throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, Italy and Sweden. Prior to Raymond, Smiley worked in various freelance, corporate and consultant roles, primarily as a product designer in the consumer electronics industry. He also held roles ranging from marketing brand management to user interface specification and exhibit design. He holds more than 40 material handling patents, a Quick-Fold kayak patent and two “Glide Key” patents for text input devices. Smiley’s interests ​include photography, music composition, and various vehicle projects spanning aircraft, auto and watercraft designs. A sought-after mentor, speaker and innovation leader, he regularly engages in university collaboratives, supports or sponsors Toyota student design competitions, and serves as a liaison with Raymond’s University Research Program for various eCommerce, human robot communications and omnichannel projects.
