Amy Kern, MID, is a Professor of Industrial Design at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Her work integrates human-centered design, design research, and systems thinking to continuously improve design education and industry futures. Prior to academia, Kern worked as a design director with international manufacturers and leading U.S. brands, specializing in spatial, furniture, and lighting design for both contract and residential markets. In 2012, she founded a design consultancy that combines humanitarian and participatory design initiatives with product development.
Kern’s current research focuses on circular design, ethnography, and the design of learning environments that enhance student experiences. She investigates the intersections of culture, psychology, and sustainability, aiming to foster innovation through cross-disciplinary collaboration. She holds a Master of Industrial Design from Pratt Institute. In addition to teaching, Kern remains active as a designer, researcher, and artist.
