One Big Bench

One Big Bench (OBB) is modular scalable public space seating designed for and used by a non-profit organization in New York City. The non-profit creates pop-ups in public spaces like Open Streets or plazas by invitation of local community groups and City agencies. Each kit is comprised of 8 birch plywood benches and 2 shell chair seat-backs made of recycled HDPE. Multiple kits can be connected to form larger configurations. The set of benches can be set up by 1-2 people in minutes and reconfigured to be social seating, audience seating, or even an outdoor classroom. When not in use, One Big Bench comes apart and packs flat in a custom rolling bin, ready for its next deployment.
