AlgaMatrix: A Modular Algae-Based Bioreactor System for Sustainable Indoor Environments

AlgaMatrix is our scalable, adaptable, algae-based bioreactor system designed to redefine sustainable architecture. In response to global climate challenges and the escalating demand for eco-friendly buildings, AlgaMatrix integrates biophilic design with advanced materials and computational technology. Our system harnesses the carbon-capturing ability of microalgae, specifically Chlorella Vulgaris, to reduce a building’s carbon footprint while improving indoor air quality. AlgaMatrix employs 3D-printed PLA frameworks and TPU membranes in an optimized tetrahedral configuration for maximum material efficiency and flexible deployment. An integrated IoT mobile application provides real-time algae growth monitoring and control, ensuring consistent performance. Preliminary tests indicate that AlgaMatrix can significantly enhance environmental performance by capturing CO₂ and producing reusable biomass. This project embodies a new paradigm in bio-fabrication for the built environment, merging material innovation, digital computation, and nature-inspired design to foster resilient, carbon-neutral urban habitats.
