Shawn Egan

Innovation Specialist, Maple Hill Engineering I get great satisfaction in seeing products that I have worked on in the market place. Not a day goes by that I don’t see something while driving, shopping or eating that I have designed or engineered. I see potential product opportunities that others can’t and am able to show concepts in drawing, rendering, CAD and animations. I excel at solving mechanical problems and uncovering unknown consumer needs resulting in innovations. I have a passion for USA manufacturing and innovation. A BS in ID and MS in manufacturing along with years of engineering experience provides a unique perspective on product development. My objective is to continue to expand my knowledge and exposure to new product introductions helping to drive competitive advantage and securing corporate IP. Shawn has worked with engineering teams in the development of some of the most complex consumer products including refrigerators, vending and vacuum machines. He also teaches new product development at SIUC and enjoys giving back by providing counsel to several of his students on portfolios, interviewing for their first jobs, IP, CAD, project management and rendering programs. Outside of work, he enjoys being involved in ice hockey including coaching and played Division 1 for Kent State for four years. Egan has been married for 30 plus years and has raised four children.

Statement of Candidacy

Just like you I want to understand how best to adjust to the rapidly changing global economy, design, manufacturing and collaborative environment we all must work within today. I became involved with IDSA back in the 1990’s and was recently asked to support the position of Midwest District Chapter Representative. I work full time for a leading manufacturer of vacuums and teach NPD at SIUC. I believe it is important to continue learning and to stay relevant in design, manufacturing and tools to communicate and protect ideas. I have handled both US and international consumer projects for several well-known companies including Whirlpool, Electrolux, Contico and Crane Merchandising.  Intellectual property is a passion and I enjoy helping others understand how to protect and promote ideas. I am at a point in my career where I can give back and share key learnings with others. I have provided counsel to several of my students at SIUC on portfolios, interviewing for their first jobs, IP, CAD, project management and rendering programs. I know that we can accomplish wonderful things together for IDSA and our region.
