Doug Paige explores how biomimicry can help solve problems in industrialized societies. He and his students study the Cuyahoga River bulkheads and fish health using biomimicry. Along with studio classroom projects, he has developed new models of education, bringing students and the community together for special projects. They have created pallet furniture, urban bike racks and studio furniture from deconstructed houses. As an associate professor of industrial design, he has collaborated with the University of Akron’s Integrated Bioscience Doctorate Program to bring together biology and design with joint campus classes. Before joining the Cleveland Institute of Art faculty in 1998, he spent several years as a practicing designer with Thomson Consumer Electronics and consulting firms in California and Ohio. In addition to teaching, he maintains a design consultancy with technical, medical and outdoor sporting goods manufacturers. Paige holds a degree in industrial design from The Cleveland Institute of Art.
