Omar Vakharia brings design to the forefront of product development at Johnson & Johnson. Working across functions and with other MD&D operating companies, Vakharia has promoted design thinking to build organizational efficiencies. He has partnered with global thought leaders and medical societies to conceptualize and design various surgical devices. He holds 49 US patents and multiple pending applications. He has secured intellectual property across multiple business units, including mechanical stapling, HARMONIC® and ENSEAL® and in the areas of surgical robotics, intraluminal catheter based systems and orthopedics. In 2015, he earned a Johnson & Johnson’s 3Rs Award for development of a medical device simulator. He has co-authored three articles in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy about surgical innovations.
Advances in Surgical Simulation: Unique Approaches to Developing Anatomy Models for Device Evaluation
This will be an interactive lab where participants will have the ability to experience various types of anatomical simulators in a replicated surgical use environment. Cory Kimball, IDSA, and Omar Vakharia, IDSA, of Ethicon’s Industrial Design/Human Factors Center of Excellence—a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson—will discuss the techniques utilized to test medical product concepts.
Learn how patient imaging data is utilized to create virtual simulators, inanimate models and animate adaptations to replicate human anatomy— methods proven to reduce device use error, shorten product development time and minimize the need for in vivo testing.
