Morgan Matt, IDSA is a firm believer in a user-centered design approach, connecting deeply to the feelings users associate with products and the holistic design experience. With a natural ability to understand beyond verbal expression, Morgan recognizes the importance of designing with a lens of empathy at every opportunity.
A strong passion for product design for women and by women shifted Morgan’s career trajectory to her current job at P&G’s Shaving Headquarters in Boston, MA. There, she works as an industrial designer for Gillette Venus, tackling the everyday pain points of shaving and grooming care. In this role, Morgan combines trend forecasting, material innovation and design for manufacturability in efforts to evolve existing and projected product families across the Gillette female brand.
During her time in Chicago from 2016-2018, Morgan worked for Insight Product Development, where she worked alongside the design team to develop medical devices, connected health technologies and drug delivery systems. In 2017, Morgan was one of 17 speakers at the first SQ1CON: a conference that IDSA Chicago Chapter Chair Hector Silva organized around the importance of analog design sketching.
As a student in Virginia Tech’s College of Architecture and Urban Studies, Morgan launched a start-up company, funded successful products on Kickstarter and redesigned archaic everyday items to be more humane and sustainable. For her senior thesis, she redesigned the speculum used in gynecological exams, since the metal, two-pronged device in use today still bears the 1845 design introduced by a male doctor in Alabama.
Recognizing her design trajectory and efforts to break boundaries on rather taboo subject matter, Morgan was honored as the college’s 2017 Outstanding Senior Representative: an award she views as a success for all women in her university and the industrial design industry. As she continues to build experience and grow as a designer, Morgan hopes to encourage young women to stand out in the industrial design world, tackle provocative subjects and take entrepreneurial risks.
After moving to Boston in September 2018, Morgan joined IDSA Boston under previous Chair Angela Corrado, IDSA, who set the stage for a successful and reinvigorated IDSA chapter.
Morgan previously served on the Chicago IDSA Chapter as Vice Chair in 2018 and looks forward to keeping the momentum behind Boston’s event series.
