Julian Maturino first started blowing glass at California State University-Fullerton in 2005, where he was taught in the traditional venetian fashion by Joe Cariati. Maturino was immediately intrigued by the technical process—making him fall in love with form, function and color.
Maturino then worked in Southern Calfornia hot glass production studios, which instilled a strong design aesthetic in his work. He has been a teaching assistant at the Penland School of Crafts, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Pilchuck Glass School and the Corning Museum of Glass.
Maturino has worked internationally as a gaffer for the Corning Museum of Glass and for The Ohio State University. Now, he works at the Pittsburgh Glass Center and is collaborating with his partner, Leah Lynn, to developing a product line in glass.

Designer Julian Maturino will discuss creating modern products using centuries-old techniques. He will draw from his personal experiences—working in production facilities, studying with masters, traveling abroad and teaching the trade—to discuss the role of transitioning from a craftsmen to a modern designer.
