Words
“Design is all about people, … creating meaningful experiences with durable connections to the brand. This is where design research enables a designer’s insight to drive a product vision. Conceptual Design is that fulcrum where an integrated process adds such strong value to the efforts of an organization. Form, detail and technology all play a part, sure, they are to be controlled and balanced for a harmonized expression. But understanding that connection to the user and extending it from the culture of an organization out through the design process is where the value lies.”
Work
Dale’s experience spans both sides of the design bridge, from consulting (RDI 1983-1995) and its adaptive high-energy environment to the corporate enterprise (Tyco, 1995-2009) operating within a structure of measured product development stage gates to control risk and reduce errors. He has a broad scope of capabilities ranging from detailed Ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments to patient friendly Renal therapy systems for both Hemo and Peritoneal Dialysis. Packaging of technology ranges from thumbnail-sized EAS RFID tags and retail merchandising security systems out to broadcast Satellite News Gathering Vehicles for the major networks.
Dale has been active in launching several start-up ventures, well-versed with the risks of innovation. Tampa Bay Boat Works pioneered the concept of sport-furniture by abstracting offshore fishing equipment expressed as furniture and lighting for the sport-fishing enthusiast. Another venture, INID, the Information Network for Intelligent Design provided early pre-browser access in partnership with the IDSA connecting designers with news, events, activities and articles on design.
“I’m addicted to reading about those people involved in the scientific process and the insights and connections that they‘re engaged in. Our understanding of the fundamentals of physics and the intricacies of biology mirror many of the market forces and the behavior of people involved in innovation. I’ve been heavily influenced by the writings of Timothy Ferris, John Gribben, Richard Feynman, Roger Martin, Dean of Rotman, and E.O. Wilson, Biology Chair at Harvard.
With an ID degree from the University of Kansas, he was awarded an MDDI Gold in 1998.
Dale holds 4 Utility Patents, and 5 Design Patents.
He also creates studio furniture. For more information on Dale’s work Click here.
