Why/how did you choose to pursue a career in industrial design?
I have always been interested in the sciences but had a parallel love for fine arts. When I first learned about Brown and RISD’s dual degree program when I was in high school, I began to seriously consider a career in art and design for the first time. That’s what lead me to discover Industrial Design and I realized that it was the perfect fusion of engineering and art. I love how Industrial Design is not only a career but an entire way of thinking and that its impact is only limited by the practitioner’s ambition and vision.
What are your strongest design capabilities?
Research, critical thinking, problem solving, presentation, and ideating
What has been the most valuable lesson in the practice of design you have acquired thus far?
That the process never ends, there is constantly room for improvement in a project and to constantly push your ideas further.
What has been your favorite project? Why?
My favorite project is the one I am currently working on: high-tech travel gear for the contemporary market. I am looking at integrating smart materials into travel gear in order to ease the entire travel experience. I am excited by this project not only because I am looking at integrating the forefront of scientific nanomaterials into an easy-to-use line of consumer products, but because I have been able to dedicate a lot of time to the project and have really delved deeply into researching my user and user needs. I find this element exciting because I have really been able to validate my design concepts and have found a wealth of inspiration in their travel challenges.
What are your goals for your design career?
I want to get experience in a wide variety of industries working at a design firm when I graduate. Eventually, I see myself as an entrepreneur working either on a product-based start-up in the environmental or social innovation field or creating my own design and consulting firm focused on sustainable product development.
