On the Write Track

An IDSA member has come up with a glass fountain pen that can write with anything from wine to soy sauce.

Jessica Chan, IDSA, says WINKpens also can be filled with juice, tea , dark beer—just about any fluid that contains a staining property. The standard model is made of a two-sided, glass writing nib; a coupler; transparent glass housing; a twisting, refill ink system; and a barrel cap. Chan, of Portland, OR, hopes to sell her WINKpens in wineries, travel companies, art supply stores, specialty gift shops and online.

The End of Throwing it Over the Wall

IDSA Member Tom KraMer says "assembly-line thinking" has contributed to the schism between designers (artists) and engineers (craftsmen). "It arose from several issues, but misunderstanding is a primary component of the problem, from both sides of the equation," writes the president and managing principal

From breakdancing to breakout sessions, IDSA’s 2015 Midwest District Design Conference made quite a splash in St. Louis. Professionals, students, speakers and sponsors met at the INTERSECTION May 1-2.

IDSA Student Member Rocks It!

She tells Furniture Design, her project “aesthetically highlights the integration of rustic and industrial fabrication with its cohesive and simplistic beauty.” IDSA Student Member and University of Oregon senior majoring in product and material studies Sarah Goldner has won the top prize in the Groovystuff by Design: Connecting Education with Industry Challenge.

Tea Time, On the Go

What started out as a project to raise money for student fees, extracirricular activities and a spring break trip to design firms, has served up quite a treat. Members of IDSA's Student Chapter at Western Washington University have created Imbue, a tea-brewing vessel that uses magnets to make it a tea steeper and a mug. The IDSA Student Chapter Advisor at Western Washington University is Associate Professor Arunas Oslapas.
