IDSA Members Weigh in on Housewares Designs

It's design season, and that means IDSA members across the country are taking part in a variety of industrial design specialties and competitions. The latest example comes from the 13th annual Housewares Design Awards, presented Jan. 30, 2018 in Las Vegas by HomeWorld Business, in which IDSA members Jason Belaire, Cyan Godfrey and Max Burton participated as judges.

"Startlingly Creative"

For the second year in a row, an IDSA Student Merit Award winner has captured one of the top spots at the Imaginations Design Competition hosted by Disney Imagineering! "The most valuable takeaway from the IDSA SMAs, as well as from the Walt Disney Imagineering Competition, is really the people you will get to meet along your way," says Claire Puginier, IDSA.

CES 2018: A Design Insider's View

The team from Whipsaw, Inc has visited CES every year since 1999. Each year, thousands of new products are introduced. "The show is a jarring assortment of competing gadgets and technology—epitomizing both very good and very bad design You go numb after a day," says President and Principal Designer Dan Harden, IDSA. "We comb for important tech advancements that might benefit from good design and we seek big ideas that portend a future category." See his take on CES 2018.

Spreading the Word

An IDEA 2018 juror and former IDEA winner who's marking 20 years as a professional designer, is spreading the word about industrial design. "What motivates me to inspire and teach the next generation is the debt I owe to the generation before me," says Michael DiTullo, founder and chief creative of Michael DiTullo LLC in Leucadia, CA. Busy is an understatement when it comes to describing the daily life of the founding director of the Department of Product Design at the University of Oregon, the site of IDSA's WDDC 2018. She took some time out to answer a few questions for us.

Designing Dining

Rochester Institute of Technology’s Industrial Design Department, including members of IDSA's Student Chapter at RIT, is serving up the savory results of its eighth annual Metaproject that creates industry partnerships. Designing Dining—a four-course meal experience—was crafted by 16 ID students and an interior design student. The setting: Good Luck Restaurant in Rochester.

Bold Expression

In 2017, the Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW) Trust marks the 150th anniversary of the legendary architect’s birth, so a recent tour of a complex designed by Wright held even more significance for members of the IDSA Central New York Chapter. In 1903, Wright was told by entrepreneur Darwin Martin that if Wright could successfully design a house for Martin in Buffalo, then Wright could design Martin's soap company headquarters. Wright ended up designing both.
