His work in the field has made headlines.

Now, Cooper Woodring—IDSA Fellow and former President and Executive Vice President—along with intellectual property attorney Christopher V. Carani, Esq., have led the latest seminar on expert design witness certification. It was held April 12-13, 2015 next to the US Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, VA.

Collectively, the 11 participants carry 279 years of membership in IDSA and have had 239 issued US patents. Five of them are IDSA Fellows; four of them are current or past IDSA chairpersons, adding up to what Woodring hails as "extraordinary quality."

"I can’t imagine a better group to serve in the near future as qualified expert design witnesses to protect or defend the original industrial designs created by our members and others in the  industrial design community," he says. "They were awesome!"

Carani, a partner at the Chicago-based intellectual property law firm McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd., says as more design rights are sought on a vast array of products in physical and virtual realms, more design disputes are arising. "To help the legal system resolve these disputes, it is important that attorneys and judges alike seek input from the diverse design expertise of the membership of IDSA," he explains. "It is more than nice to see that IDSA, by offering this seminar, is out in front of the curve preparing its members to meet this significant challenge and societal need.”

Seminar attendees included: Eric Anderson, IDSA; Charles Austen Angell, IDSA Board Chair; Matt Beale, IDSA; Bruce Claxton, L/IDSA; Jim Couch, IDSA; George R. Daniels, L/IDSA; Tim Fletcher, IDSA; Paul Hatch, IDSA; Nancy Perkins, IDSA; Rob Tannen, IDSA; and John von Buelow, IDSA.

“The seminar was a unique opportunity to teach very talented and accomplished designers the legal fundamentals and intricacies of design IP law," says Carani. "The seminar attendees were very eager to learn, which made my job easy. It was a wonderful two days filled with challenging questions and debate.”
