SABIC and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA have announced the winners of a three-month long competition focused on designing an innovative vehicle for Generation Alpha—the youngsters who will be behind the wheel after 2025.
Industrial design students from Parsons: The New School for Design have teamed up with a non-profit that's leading the charge for more sustainable pratices in schools. Their compostable plates will be distributed at cafeterias in six of the largest US school districts, serving 2.5 million meals a day. Assistant Professor of Product and Industrial Design Daniel Michalik says students were part of the initial effort by the New York City Department of Education to make the switch from polystyrene trays to compostable plates.
The Association of Chartered Industrial Designers of Ontario (ACIDO) is holding its 14th annual Rocket design thesis competition. It's open to seniors at Canada’s Carleton University, Humber College and OCAD University (formerly known as the Ontario College of Art and Design). The entry deadline is June 1, 2015.
From a smart faucet to a more enlightening museum experience, prototypes by IDSA members and other students in Drexel University’s Senior Showcase are envisioning innovative approaches to age-old dilemmas.
IDSA Student Member Connor White teamed up with a mechanical engineering student on the Smart Faucet, which not only would purify and conserve water, but also provide detailed information on water quality, average usage rates and efficient usage suggestions.

Candleholders created by Fabio Castellanos, IDSA, and several other New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) students and professors will be featured in the Curse the Darkness design showcase, part of New York City Design Week, May 15-18, 2015.

The Rhode Island School of Design has taken another step to secure a new team at the top. It has appointed Pradeep Sharma as its new provost. Sharma has been serving as RISD's interim chief academic leader since January 2014.
