Professional members of IDSA are eligible to serve as leaders in the Society and, consequently, in the field of industrial design through volunteerism.

Leadership may be geographically centered in communities through IDSA's professional and international hubs and student chapters at colleges and universities with industrial design or related degree programs. Or, leadership may also be exercised through IDSA sections; groups organized around professional and special interests in the field of industrial design.

The highest level of leadership in the Society is at the national level through the Board of Directors, Committees, Task Forces and other working groups established to serve specific needs.

While the above opportunities are open to professional members, affiliate and student members may also exercise their leadership skills and vision by participating in more task or goal specific activities conducted through IDSA headquarters, chapters and hubs and sections.
