DESCRIPTION:My deadline had come… and was just rolling past me\, taillights still in view. The latest issue of INNOVATION was sitting beside me\, tackling the theme “The Story Behind The Design” – a compelling topic for sure. I certainly heard a lot of my colleagues make references to how important storytelling was\, but examples of how they did it and to what effect were few and far between. I needed to find a way to get local designers engaged in a meaningful discussion\, and this seemed like as good an opportunity as any. \nIn my own experience\, achieving a smart balance was always the challenge. How to build up the story to draw stakeholders in\, while stopping short of creating “fluff” they would write off as a waste of time or budget. Simple\, flexible tools got used over again\, while elegant excursions that required significant investment were “learning experiences”. Image collages\, word clusters\, video… all arrows in the quiver\, utilized when most effective. \nSo I decided the topic would be to discuss and share effective and efficient storytelling methods and tools we had experimented with. For a venue\, I selected Red Dot Tosa (in Wauwatosa\, apparently). For a date\, I zeroed in on Thursday\, February 23rd at 6pm. DESCRIPTION:The Industrial Designers Society of America\, St. Louis Chapter (IDSA-STL)\, in partnership with the Saint Louis Science Center (SLSC) are proud to announce the 2015 5th Annual IDSA-STL Student Design Competition. \nWhen: October 24th\, 2015 — afternoon public presentations followed by award ceremony \nWhere: The Saint Louis Science Center\, Boeing Hall \nThe Design Challenge: Invent an engaging design solution for an experience that could take place at Saint Louis Science Center’s Science Corner \nBackground Info: \n\nSite location is at the undeveloped Science Corner\, at the intersection of Kingshighway Blvd. and Manchester Ave.\, St. Louis\, MO.\, which is also an entrance to The Grove entertainment district.\nScience Corner is composed of 42\,000 sq. ft. of land owned by the Saint Louis Science Center.\nSolution(s) should bolster the Science Center educational mission statement: “To ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning” \nConsiderations must be sensitive to the surrounding Forest Park Southeast neighborhood.\nA designated Science Center spokesperson will serve as the client representative.\nPresentations will be open to the public before a panel of jurors from the St. Louis professional design community\, SLSC and Forest Park Southeast neighborhood.\nStudent entrants must be enrolled within a university design program and are strongly encouraged to work in cross-disciplinary teams.\nEntries limited to two (2) teams from each university.\nCash award provided to the winning team.\nDistribution of a detailed design brief will follow this Spring.\nSubmitted designs can remain on public display at the Science Center after the competition.

SUMMARY:Design Voices: The Future of Healthcare and What it Means for the Role of Industrial Designers
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Stephen Wilcox\, PhD\, FIDSA \nThe presentation starts with a summary of the changes that have taken place in healthcare\, particularly with medical devices\, over the past 30 years\, then provides predictions of what will happen in the next 30 years. Medical care has changed dramatically; many of the procedures that we take for granted today didn’t exist 30 years ago. Changes in healthcare have relied upon general technological developments\, so\, to predict what will happen in the future\, it’s necessary to predict what will change in technology. It seems likely that many present developments will continue—e.g.\, better computing power\, smaller miniaturization\, etc. The difficult part is to predict the radical changes to be expected in the future. The final challenge is to figure out what the role of industrial design will be in healthcare. \n

SUMMARY:Design Voices: Designing Healthcare of the Future: Disease to Wellness to Swellness
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Clay Marsh\, MD \nTo sustainably improve the health of our population\, health and healthy choices in communities need to become the norm. This presentation discusses our approach to this goal targeting the dimensions of health that include exercise\, food\, sleep\, stress\, social networks and family. We believe that the areas of Design and Design Thinking are critical to construct health ecosystems and optimize user experiences.  These complex systems are asymmetric\, where a few agents or elements are more important than others. Ecosystem design allows us to initially target the high value areas of exercise\, and envision how to construct an ecosystem that makes healthy choices and health the norm by bending the world around the person. This presentation will discuss how we are trying to construct this ecosystem with designers\, focusing on optimizing the user experience at the interface level\, and layering this experience set with precision tools to navigate individual decisions and nudge community decisions and offerings. \n
