SUMMARY:IDSA SF: Bay Area Design : Past and Future
DESCRIPTION:Bay Area design has changed the world over and it’s not just lately with tech successes like Facebook\, Instagram\, and Pinterest. A rich design culture has formed here\, from architecture and housewares to personal computers and outdoor equipment\, all of which has rich design roots in Silicon Valley. At this event we will have conversations with some some of the Bay Area’s pioneers of Innovative Design companies in an effort to understand what in the past has influenced and fostered this innovative design and where it has led us to where we are today\, so that we can project and better prepare for the frontiers of all design culture tomorrow. \nDan Harden\nCEO\, Whipsaw \nDan Harden is President and principal designer of Whipsaw Inc.\, where he directs the strategic and conceptual direction of most client accounts. Dan came to the Bay Area in 1989 with a love of design and technology to join frogdesign\, and eventually formed his own firm Whipsaw in 1999. His contribution and influence on Bay Area design\, including prolific design innovation\, team building\, and working with luminaries like Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison\, give him an insightful perspective on the event topic. Throughout his thirty-five year consulting career Dan has designed hundreds of successful products in diverse fields ranging from baby bottles to supercomputers\, for startups and major International brands including AT&T\, Braun\, Brita\, Dell\, Ford\, GE\, Google\, Intel\, Logitech\, Motorola\, Olympus\, Samsung\, Sony\, and many more. Dan has won over 260 design awards and granted over 300 patents. Fast Company named him one of the 100 Most Creative People\, calling him “design’s secret weapon”\, and was inducted into the World Technology Network honoring those doing the most innovative work of the greatest long term significance. Prior to coming to the Bay Area in 1999\, Dan worked at Henry Dreyfuss Associates\, George Nelson Associates\, HP and Richardson/Smith. \nBarry Katz \nIDEO Fellow/ Industrial Design Professor CCA \nBarry Katz is an expert in the history/theory of design and technology in the Bay Area. He has written numerous books about this subject including\, (with Tim Brown) Change By Design\, and most recently\, Make it New: The History of Silicon Valley Design (MIT Press\, 2015). Barry uses his training on design history/culture to teach Industrial and Interaction Design at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco\, and he is also a Consulting Professor in the Design Group\, Department of Mechanical Engineering\, at Stanford. Outside of academia Barry is a fellow at IDEO\, Silicon Valley’s leading design and innovation consultancy \, where he is engaged in the front-end research on projects ranging from medical to consumer products. Barry was educated at McGill University in Montréal\, the London School of Economics\, and holds a doctorate from the University of California at Santa Cruz. \nRob Forbes \nFounder\, Design Within Reach and Public Bikes \nRob Forbes has been a ceramic artist\, professor\, author\, publisher\, photographer\, and business entrepreneur. He has held executive positions at numerous retail companies\, but is best known as the Founder of Design Within Reach (1998) and PUBLIC Bikes (2009). DWR pioneered many changes that have become mainstream today: internet retailing of modern design\, design blogging\, transparent pricing\, and a focus on designers themselves as much as on their products. PUBLIC bikes is a similar business model but a mission to bring design awareness to our public urban spaces and to our civic lives. Rob has received numerous awards and public recognition for his advocacy of art\, design\, and urbanism and serves on several boards in the non-profit sector. He recently authored See for Yourself published by Chronicle Books\, a visual study and search for beauty in our everyday world.

SUMMARY:IDSA SF: Storytelling & Design
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling is one of the most important tools utilized by designers to create deeper connections with brands and products\, while capturing the imagination of their users. Whether a narrative is used to steer the design process or articulate a vision to clients\, good storytelling simply brings ideas to life. Join us as we learn how these Bay Area creatives stir emotion\, build empathy\, articulate values\, and construct strong narratives that integrate form and language. \nPeter Michaelian\nDirector of Product Experiences at Dolby Laboratories\nThrough industrial and experience design\, Peter and his team help to bring some of the most advanced audio and visual experiences to the world. Previously\, he served as creative director at frog in San Francisco. Peter received undergraduate and master’s degrees from The Cooper Union in New York City and taught as an adjunct professor of design at The Cooper Union\, University of California-Berkeley and California College for the Arts. He is named on 62 patents and 25 international design awards. \nSusan Orenstein\nHead of Communications at Caymus Vineyards\nSusan focuses on helping organizations craft their messaging and communications about environmental and social change. Her clients have included Gap Inc.\, SAP\, and Williams-Sonoma. Her work includes conceptualizing\, writing and editing social responsibility reports\, and has touched a wide range of strategic communications projects. http://www.orensteincommunications.com/index.html \nBrian Rink\nDirector of Design Research at Nio\nBrian has a truly amazing story\, starting with working as a diplomat for the Department of State. His career has taken him from Japan to Denmark and back to San Francisco. Brian instills a balance of listening and storytelling in his students at California College of the Arts. Specializing in design research he has worked with Pentagram\, IDEO\, Frog\, NIO and more. \nMitra Shahidi\nStory Artist at Pixar Animation Studios\nMitra Shahidi moved to the USA from Turkey to pursue the art of animation. She studied 3D character animation at Academy of Art University in San Francisco where she made a short film and discovered storytelling. Upon graduation\, she proceeded to work in the gaming industry where she eventually started art directing. Passionate about storytelling\, she left working in games to pursue storyboarding which lead her to being a story artist at Pixar. In her free time\, Mitra loves to play the piano\, do improv and read. \nNate Stanton\nStory Supervisor at Pixar Animation Studios\nNate has 24 years experience working on Feature Films\, Short Films\, Commercials\, and Video Game projects. Pixar Animation Studios has been his home for the last 21 years\, providing Story Boarding on multiple films including ‘A Bug’s Life’\, ‘Toy Story II’\, ‘Monsters INC.’\, ‘Finding Nemo’\, ‘Ratatouille’\, ‘Wall-E’\, ‘Brave’\, ‘Cars II’\, the theatrical short ‘The Blue Umbrella’\, and the most recent Pixar release ‘Coco’. Prior to Pixar he worked at Skellington Productions on ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ and ‘James and the Giant Peach’ doing 2D assistant animation support in the features. Stanton earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ‘Character Animation’ from the California Institute of the Arts in 1992.

SUMMARY:IDSA MKE: DISCUSSIONmeetup: Making Your Point
DESCRIPTION:The brilliance inside your head may be breathtaking\, but if it doesn’t make it to others with fidelity it can be heartbreaking. Be it a certain iridescence to a color\, an undulation in sculptural form\, or a hidden quirk of interaction that leads to new revenues – effective communication is essential for ideas to become reality. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, December 13th for our final DISCUSSIONmeetup on 2017. We will start with the loose definition of “methods and tricks of effective communication” and see where it goes from there. SUMMARY:IDSA CHI + IIT Institute of Design: The way we [will] work
DESCRIPTION:Nov 1\, 2017 6 – 8p \nTEAMS Design\n1812 West Hubbard St #200 \nThe work we do is changing. So\, too\, are work environments. A growing liquid workforce ebbs and flows when need recedes and rises. People who thrive in the new economy are continuously learning self-starters with fuzzy titles to match their adaptability. The office is the living room\, coffee shop\, and CTA platform\, and our newest colleague is Watson. \nIDSA Chicago and IIT Institute of Design are bringing together a group of educators and practitioners to turn a critical eye to the new tensions emerging around work. Our panelists will discuss this new context for design of the products we use and the systems we inhabit in our workplace. What cultural values are shaping the workplace? What are the new obligations of the organizations that we work with and for? What does it mean to be adaptive—to have a flexing workspace that empowers the people who use it? What does it mean when we ‘design the systems’ in which work happens vs. designing and arranging the artifacts? \nPanelists \nYared Akalou\, founder of Alcove GroupYared Akalou\, founder of Alcove Group\, a product development company augmenting the way people work in the digital age is a seasoned entrepreneur with a background deeply rooted in user experience design. Yared is regularly invited to speak on various guest panels and lecture on the role design thinking (and doing) can play to continually innovate in today’s digital economy. He is a recurring guest host on Breakthrough Radio\, a live online radio show\, where he shares the latest trends and forces shaping the Future of Workforce. Yared is an advisor\, mentor\, and educator where continual learning and sharing is integral to his life’s work. \nKevin Budelmann\, President of PeopledesignKevin Budelmann is president of Peopledesign\, a design innovation firm. A strategic partner to a variety of organizations\, Peopledesign works with many organizations including manufacturing\, services\, healthcare\, education\, and consumer products. Kevin is interested in design theory and practice in the context of business\, technology\, and society. He holds BA in design from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Design Methods from IIT Institute of Design. Kevin is also a Director for IxDA and an adjunct professor at Northwestern University. His book\, Brand Identity Essentials\, is available six languages. \nLiz Gerber\, Founder of Design for America\, Design Professor at Northwestern UniversitySocial technologies are changing who\, when\, and how people work together\, yet our understanding of how to design effective organizations and support technologies is limited. Liz works day after day with her colleagues and students at Design for America and Northwestern University to close the gap. She has been invited to speak nationally and internationally at non-profit and for-profit institutions\, including Facebook\, Hewlett-Packard\, MIT\, and Stanford. Her work has been featured in such venues as Wall Street Journal\, NPR\, ABC\, Harvard Business Review\, Forbes\, and Fast Company. \nJan Johnson\, FIIDA\, VP Design and Workplace Resources at AllsteelJan has spent her career strengthening the correlations between business strategies and the planning\, design and management of workplaces. She is a highly respected workplace strategist; leads Allsteel’s Workplace Advisory team; and frequently writes\, speaks and teaches. Jan and her team share research\, experience and perspectives on how trends – like social change and technology – are playing out in the workplace. They help customers evaluate these trends through the lens of each organization’s unique culture\, goals\, and objectives to determine what’s most relevant and applicable to them. \nModerator \nPaul Hatch is CEO of the Chicago branch of industrial design and user experience firm TEAMS Design. TEAMS Design has five branches and has been awarded over 1000 design awards. He is also co-founder of Design House\, a nonprofit with a mission to help revitalize local manufacture. Paul is co-author of two books about the impact of design and technology on business. He is also known for founding and running an extreme debate event called Fight Club\, which the New York Times called “A Designer Slugfest.”

SUMMARY:IDSA MKE: DISCUSSIONmeetup: Serving The Purpose
DESCRIPTION:Is effective design always “good design”? As self-appointed arbiters of good taste and user-centric rigor\, are we ever personally satisfied with the solution that is the most popular? In your professional life\, do you play the role of the soulless mercenary or the committed zealot? \nJoin us on Wednesday\, October 25th to participate in an open discussion about fulfilling your design destiny. Something drew you to this career\, and you’ve put a lot of effort toward developing your sensitivities and awareness of what makes a design “awesome” (technical term). Do you employ these powers to elevate the market\, or to anticipate what the majority wants? \nOr do you simply ask yourself “what would Dieter do? \nEither way\, share some drinks and appetizers with us as we ponder this issue and others. As always\, DISCUSSIONmeetup is free for IDSA professional members and those interested in finding out a bit about our chapter while networking with peers.
