SUMMARY:IDSA CLE: Rams Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Come to Cleveland Institute of Art’s Peter B. Lewis (PBL) Auditorium for a special screening of “Rams.” The film will begin at approximately 7:00 pm\, but be sure to arrive early for appetizers\, beverages\, and networking with the design community. After the screening\, stick around for a Q&A discussion with four Greater Cleveland based designers: Dan Cuffaro (Chair\, Industrial Design at CIA)\, Angela Clark (Root Art\, Design and Strategy)\, Carla Blackman (Design Interface)\, and Pete Whitworth (Smartshape Design). \n“‘Rams’ is the new documentary by filmmaker Gary Hustwit (Helvetica) about legendary designer Dieter Rams. For over fifty years\, Rams has left an indelible mark on the field of product design with his iconic work at Braun and Vitsoe\, and his influence on Apple. “Rams” is a design documentary\, but it’s also a rumination on consumerism\, materialism\, and sustainability. Dieter’s philosophy is about more than just design\, it’s about a way to live. The film also features an original score by pioneering musician Brian Eno. More info and trailers here: http://www.hustwit.com/rams”

SUMMARY:IDSA NYC: Perspectives - Origins of Industrial Design in NYC
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation remembering the heyday of New York ID…. when Dreyfuss\, Loewy\, Teague\, Nelson\, Lippincott\, JCPenny\, Knoll and others were writing some the first chapters in the history of American design. In a loose\, salon-style discussion we’ll share memories and stories from NYC’s ID past featuring NYC icons: \nCarl Gustav MagnussonCarl worked with the Eames’ on projects ranging from the IBM Mathematica Exhibit to the Eames Chaise.  He opened his own studio in Rudolf Schindler’s House in LA. He was director of global design at Knoll for three decades\, commissioned designers such as Richard Sapper\, Mia Linn\, Ross Lovegrove\, and Frank Gehry. His New York based firm\, CGM Design\, has designed products for Knoll\, Teknion\, MoMA\, and BMW. \nMichael CousinsA native New Yorker\, 1960 graduate of the Rhode  Island School of Design. Joined his brother Morison\, a Pratt grad\, to form their design firm to “design consumer products that were museum quality at affordable prices”\, fulfilling that goal with products in the permanent collections of museums world wide including MoMA (4) the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt (6) and the Brooklyn Museum (3). He says: “It’s hard to beat drawing pictures for a living.” \nLucia N. DeRespinisLucia graduated from Pratt Institute in 1952\, a woman in Industrial Design worked at the George Nelson Office from 1954 to 1963\, a post\, post-graduate experience. She says:“I did everything\, I designed everything from rugs to tableware to exhibits and trade shows to graphics to restaurants to interiors. Everything.”Presently full professor at Pratt and 2007 winner of the Rowena Reed Kostellow Award. \nAlberto MantillaAlberto was born in Colombia and worked at Henry Dreyfuss Associates where he met his partner Tony Baxter. From1989 to1994 they worked on premier Dreyfuss clients: John Deere\, IBM\, Polaroid\, AT&T. The design duo then formed Curve ID a full-service industrial design and engineering consultancy working for Ford\, Kynko motorcycles\, Mac trucks\, Fisher Price\, Hewlett Packard\, Colgate\, Nike\, and Panasonic. They created Mint and the widely knocked-off Hug salt and pepper shakers\, and they continue to design Deere vehicles. \nGroheLive! SUMMARY:2019 Yeh Ideology Design Summit: The Evolution of INNOVATION
DESCRIPTION:Speakers include Betsy Goodrich\, FIDSA and Jordan Nollman\, IDSA. \nInnovation is disruptive. The kind of investment you need to review\, build and rebuild can be monumental depending on the stakeholders involved. If you’re leading innovation\, you have to change a point of view\, and there will certainly be resistance. \nThat said\, everyone wants a piece of the innovation pie\, from newfound startups to corporations who’ve been around for decades. Employers want talent who can do everything\, and talent are seeking transformational experiences in corporations with incubators and design labs. But what we’re hearing is quite different. \nWhile there are valid companies that truly need innovation and are ready to support it\, some companies are unclear on what it is they need and end up under-supporting their investment in innovation. For other companies\, the ruse of innovation is becoming a tactic to win over top talent who are put to work on menial initiatives. \nWe’re hearing more and more stories where corporation enterprises that have had years of investment in design and innovation have downsized\, diluted or even disbanded these divisions. \nDesign departments are getting smaller—to the point where\, in some corporations\, there are none. Roles in corporations are now more vertically diverse\, with requirements from big-picture vision to still being hands-on with SolidWorks skills. \n\n\n\n\nIn some companies\, innovation is now just a plaque on the door of a department. People have innovation titles\, but the work they are doing is no longer innovative—it’s just a requisition sent down by engineering or marketing\, depending on how the corporation is originated. \n\nWhat does it mean to build an innovation department?\nAre companies using innovation as a facade?\nWhere is innovation truly being invested?\nWhere is innovation needed most?\nMost of all\, how is this affecting you and your teams?\n\nJoin us as we unpack The Evolution of “Innovation.” \nSign up here: http://www.yehideology.com/design-summit-2019 \n\n\n\n\nWHENThursday\, June 6\, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM (EDT) \nWHEREKnoll Inc. SUMMARY:IDSA ATL: Game of Tribes
DESCRIPTION:IDSA Atlanta is partnering with the Atlanta Service Design Network on May 21 to host Game of Tribes: Reaching across design silos\, an engaging evening for designers from diverse backgrounds. Come to this event to learn from each other’s perspectives on practice\, get exposure to new and different ways of thinking and doing\, and collectively discover what makes Atlanta’s greater design community tick. \nFollowing some mingling\, participants will explore affinities—such as medium\, methodology\, or ethos—within and across design disciplines. Each round\, spontaneous teams will work together to answer a prompt\, complete an activity\, or make something together. This game will illuminate how designers think and work across disciplinary lines\, with the aim of inspiring all attendees to take away a new idea or method to apply to their practice.

SUMMARY:IDSA NYC: There Are No Sustainable Materials
DESCRIPTION:Join IDSA.NYC\, Hyloh and The Circular Economy Network for\, “There are no Sustainable Materials” a panel discussion on achieving real sustainability through design\, material choices and circular economy principals. \nAs the fragile state of our planet is brought into ever-sharper focus\, the notion of sustainability must move away from being a buzzword-filled trend toward urgent and actionable changes. As designers and brands struggle to heed the call to change\, our efforts are often misguided by the myths and marketing of so-called “sustainable materials”. The truth is: there are no sustainable materials\, only sustainable systems. \nModerator: \n\nSarah D’Sylva\, Co-Founder @ Hyloh\n\nPanelists: \n\nAmy Uong\, Deputy General Manager\, Sims Recycling\nJaime Salm\, Co-Founder & Creative Director @ MIO\nMarc-Aurelien Vivant\, Sr Design Engineer\, Smart Design\nRick Zultner\, VP of Research + Development\, Loop / TerraCycle
