SUMMARY:Blurred Lines: ID and UX/UI
DESCRIPTION:Come join us (virtually) for an exploration of the intersection between physical and virtual spaces: where industrial design meets experience design and interface design. How do designers balance the need for elegant physical forms and digital interactions? Where do we blur the lines between ID\, UX\, and UI? \nWe have three great speakers who will be giving their perspective on these questions from both sides and somewhere in between. They will also share a bit about how they got where they are\, tips on how to blend these two spaces\, and how they’re managing all this during a pandemic. We will follow this with breakout sessions where you’ll have a chance to discuss these topics and more with others in these fields. Join us and get fuzzy. \n\n\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGen Goodwin is an Associate Director of UX Strategy at IBM iX in Columbus\, OH. She is a graduate of OSU with a degree in Visual Communication Design and has ten years of experience in UX consulting across a broad range of both digital and physical products. With a passion for qualitative research\, she advocates for the needs of the end-users on cross-functional teams designing everything from medical devices to stadium fan experiences. \nShe will be discussing: \n\nAn overview of her career path\nTeam Dynamics (ux/engineering/people)\nSoftware vs Hardware\nTitles aren’t what they used to be\nCollaboration\nCovid specific impacts\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNick is the Creative Director for Industrial Design at Teague\, and is a proven product designer with a globally-cultivated perspective that allows him to create design solutions that are equally inspired and informed. His expertise spans the creative process from concept development to balancing the details of aesthetic appeal with functionality\, usability\, and complex engineering. Nick has led design programs and project teams for clients such as Samsung\, LG Electronics\, Intel and Honeywell. As a Creative Director at Teague\, he integrates user-centric design with strategic storytelling and fosters a collaborative\, innovation-driven environment. Nick holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Umea Institute of Design in Sweden\, and a Bachelor of Arts with Honors from Massey. \nHe will be discussing: \n\nThe myth of the genius designer\nAn interdisciplinary approach to product definition and problem solving\nPioneering the design process\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNichole is co-founder at level design sf\, an industrial design shop based in San Francisco. She has deep experience taking complex new technologies and shaping them into forms that foster emotional connections between consumers and brands. Her work has helped to create new industry categories and propelled products into the spotlight–garnering industry awards and recognition. Before founding level\, she was associate creative director at HTC and One &Co. Nichole is the Chair of IDSA Women In Design and has a mission to bring balance to the industrial design field at large. \nShe will be discussing: \n\nOverview of LEVEL and areas of expertise\nDevelopment of Tempo – Bringing the workouts to your home\nCollaboration\nCovid specific impacts

In this session\, we will be discussing Urgent Design in the time of Covid with with our guests Dominc Peralta\, Founder of Stellar Design\, and Nishat Rustagi CEO and Founder of Make. After each 30-40 min. interview there will be a moderated Q&A session. \n  \nGUEST: NISHAT RUSTAGI \nNishat is the founder & CEO of Make (makerstage.com)\, a digital manufacturing platform company in San Francisco. At Make\, we’re building a digital manufacturing platform that sits on top of a decentralized network of the latest industrial 3D printers\, CNC\, and injection molding machines across America\, to track the entire workflow for engineers\, give instant price quotes\, and unparalleled speed in the manufacturing/delivery of parts. Make’s customers include Fortune 500 companies such as Microsoft and mid-market startups in the consumer electronics and IoT/robotics segment. He’s been active in the 3D printing space for over five years. \nUntil recently\, Nishat was a project leader at the COVID19 response innovation lab at Stanford University\, where he helped grow the response lab from just 30 to over 350. Nishat’s team mobilized its network of 3D printers to print face shields for nonprofits. Nishat also consulted pro-bono with various groups in the Stanford lab and outside for design and manufacturing PPE such as face masks\, and crucial medical devices such as ventilators\, and O2 concentrators when they were in critical need. Nishat has a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of California\, San Diego. \nGUEST: DOMINIC PERALTA \nDominic Peralta is the founder of Stellar Design LLC\, a San Francisco Bay Area industrial design studio that strives to create lasting and meaningful work. SUMMARY:IDSA SYR: Color\, Material\, Form Trends
DESCRIPTION:Industrial designer are called upon to design products\, services and experiences for uncertain futures. How can they predict the colors\, materials and form trends in advance? \nFor the past 15 years\, Anouk Groen has combined her backgrounds in Product Design and Marketing Management to consult clients in various industries that need regular updating and forecast CMF trends. She identifies and analyzes emerging trends by finding the source of each trend and telling the story that goes with it in relation to each product. Her clients include automotive\, transportation\, sports products\, telecommunications\, audio visual and fashion accessories. \nIn her 40 minutes presentation\, Anouk will share examples of her past research and share some of the methodologies she utilizes that can be adopted by product designers in any field. Her presentation will be followed by a Question and Answer segment.

SUMMARY:IDSA SEA: Inclusive Gear at Arc’teryx with Katie Mah
DESCRIPTION:See how Katie Mah steers Arc’teryx toward more inclusive designs starting with critical safety equipment: the harness. \nRock climbing has historically been a male-dominated sport\, but today the paradigm is shifting. Women are rising to lead the ranks in participation\, skill\, and objectives; however\, equipment design remains largely designed by and for men. Katie Mah\, lead gear designer at Arc’teryx\, leverages her personal experience as a rock climber and industrial designer to spearhead the R&D and redesign of the most fundamental piece of safety equipment\, the climbing harness. She will discuss the journey that led her to question gender’s role in outdoor products\, resulting in a more inclusive approach to design. \nKatie Mah is a lead gear designer at Arc’teryx\, a high performance outdoor equipment company known for leading innovations in climbing\, skiing and alpine technologies. She has specialized in technical outdoor product design for the past seven years\, envisioning and creating award-winning pack designs and product collections\, most recently leading the design of Arc’teryx’s first non-gendered harness collection. \nCombining a hands-on approach to building and testing prototypes with systems design and research has enabled Katie to challenge the status quo and provide a distinct perspective. She thrives in the in-between\, merging her industrial design background with business strategy\, marketing\, and leadership in sustainability at Arc’teryx.

SUMMARY:Design Voices: Beauty in Design
DESCRIPTION:For function-oriented designers\, “beauty” can seem like a dirty word. It’s marked by the stigma of frivolous ornamentation and embracing the ephemeral in rejection of rationality and the timeless. What is often overlooked in the classic debate between form and function\, is that beauty is a function in and of itself. We select\, cherish\, and promote those objects which bring us joy\, and to suggest that beauty is irrelevant is to ignore that fundamental facet of human psychology. And while applying narrow criteria by which we define beauty can stifle innovation\, celebrating our individual tastes\, preferences\, and perspectives can immeasurably enhance it. \nHosted by Hector Silva\, IDSA\, Executive Director at Advanced Design\, with: \n\nLaura Silva\, Vice President\, Global Tech and Ops – Accessibility Technology UX Design Lead\, Bank of America\nAlex Lobos\, IDSA\, Visiting Fellow\, Strategic Foresight at Autodesk\n\n
