SUMMARY:IDSA LVL: Speculative Characters for Visual Inflection
DESCRIPTION:In the age of emojis\, type and image work in tandem to bolster our typographic voices\, conveying our wide range of emotions. What if new punctuation could formally articulate the meaning of a message as conveyed through gesture and expression? Engaging with design as a medium for inquiry\, Cinelli proposes a new set of characters to supplement our existing typefaces\, attempting to make the rich complexities of verbal and nonverbal conversation visible. \nPresented by Mia Cinelli is an Assistant Professor of Art Studio and Digital Design at the University of Kentucky. Her design practice encompasses an eclectic span of poetic and pragmatic products\, installations\, and graphics which have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Recently\, her typographic works have been acknowledged with Best in Festival for New Work at DesignTO (2020)\, a Graphis Silver award for typeface design (2018)\, a Society of Typographic Arts “STA 100” award (2019)\, and a Communication Arts Typography award (2020). With an inquiry-driven practice\, she is passionate about—and continually excited by— the possibilities of visual communication and human-centered design.

SUMMARY:IDSA SF: Multidisciplinary Teams\, Multicultural Design
DESCRIPTION:Designers face daily various psychological\, sociological and cultural challenges. How important is diversity in a team especially when designing for a global audience? And how to change our mindset to embrace “differences“? Join us on Thursday and hear Grace Hina Lee share her experience working for global brands such as Samsung and Logitech. \nGrace Lee is an industrial design leader with over 10 years of experience. She is currently a design principal at Logitech and has prior experience with Samsung\, Astro Studios\, and more. She is a designer that is passionate about building products that delight people and working with brands that speak to real users. In addition to providing a careful design sensibility and technical craft\, she finds great pleasure in the challenge of telling relatable\, emotive stories that bridge the gap between a brand’s voice and tactical product benefits. Grace approaches her work with the same attitude with which she approaches her life: her purpose is to challenge herself with complex yet meaningful problems\, empower those around her\, and most of all\, to have fun along the way.

SUMMARY:IDSA SEA: Update China: Connecting Tradition & innovation with design
DESCRIPTION:Min Chen started his training in Chinese calligraphy at a very young age and has maintained an interest in traditional Chinese arts and crafts to this day. In 2001\, he went to study at the Köln International School of Design (KISD) and completed his Bachelor’s degree at the Design Academy Eindhoven. He then went to the Domus Academy in Milan for his MA in Design\, graduating with distinction. \nIn 2010\, he returned to Hangzhou\, China to set up his design office. His work ranges from the design of objects to technological products and interior architecture. Finding the best bonding point of tradition and modernization\, East and West has always been what ‘Chen Min Office’ believes in. With this philosophy he translates traditional craftsmanship into modern furniture and objects. His work gained him international recognition and has been exhibited all over the world including the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan\, the National Museum of China in Beijing and the Louvre in Paris. \nEarly in 2020 he joined the initiative Create-Cures and connected an international group of designers aiming to promote the development of public health in a designer’s way as a reaction to the global pandemic. The work displayed at www.create-cures.com gained a lot of public interest and has recently been exhibited at Design China in Beijing. \nMin will present his internationally recognized work and discuss the philosophy that guides Chen Min Office for products ranging from technological to architectural and furniture. He’ll help us understand the balancing point between modern and traditional\, Eastern and Western\, and reconcile them in design.

SUMMARY:IDSA PVD: The Women’s Health Gold Rush: 3 CEOs Leading the Charge in Wearables
DESCRIPTION:There’s no denying that women’s health is becoming a green field in the healthcare and med tech space. To us\, one thing is certain: after being ignored by the healthcare system for so long\, the last thing we want is for our newfound voice to be drowned out by products dreamed up by male founders\, funded by male-dominated VC’s\, and built by all-male engineering teams. The gold rush is here and as female founders\, employees\, and customers\, we need to be deliberate about being on the front lines. \nFor the third installment of our series\, we’ve invited three executives to share their stories of creating wearables that solve real problems for women. Tackling issues like managing periods\, providing support through menopause\, and taking a proactive and preventative approach to sexual assault\, these leaders are pushing the boundaries. \nCarinne Chambers-Saini \nAs the CEO and co-founder of Diva International Inc\, (Diva)\, Carinne has led a 15-year journey to create and market the revolutionary product and brand\, DivaCup. Launched in 2001\, Diva disrupted the industry\, taking the concept of menstrual cups from niche to mainstream. In the last five years\, Carinne has led the company to triple-digit growth\, outselling established brands. As Diva’s CEO\, Carinne has received notable recognition\, most recently being awarded the Telus Trailblazer Award from RBC\, and the 2020 Mompreneur® Award of Excellence. Beyond product innovation\, Carinne is committed to sustainable impact and social change through DivaCares\, a program that works to create a world where menstruation is a fact of life\, not life limiting. Last year alone\, DivaCares supported over 180\,000 periods and is committed to fighting for menstrual equity for all. \nSara Dickhaus de Zarraga \nPursuing a passion for women’s rights\, adventure\, and safety\, Sara Dickhaus de Zarraga co-founded Flare in 2016. Sara is a solo traveler and paragliding pilot who loves the feeling of freedom she gets from visiting the far corners of the world. Through her travels and work at the World Bank\, she has seen the impact that safety has had on women’s quality of life all around the globe. Sara is a champion for women’s empowerment. She attended Wellesley College\, where in a powerful community of strong women\, she found herself becoming a trusted confidant to her friends and classmates on how to navigate sex and relationships. Her passion is to help women everywhere live the lives that they want free of threats of violence or harassment – where women can explore the world around them\, pursue their interests\, and their sexuality safely. While attending Harvard Business School\, she met Flare co-founder\, Quinn Fitzgerald\, and they immediately bonded over their own experiences with sexual assault which led to the creation of the business today. She currently resides in Boston. \nElizabeth Gadza \nElizabeth Gazda is the CEO of Embr Labs\, a Boston-based wearables company that developed the Embr Wave – a wrist-worn\, personal thermostat that improves sleep\, relieves anxiety and helps with hot flashes. \nPrior to Embr Labs\, Liz was a member of several founding teams including Doni\, a fintech company\, and Noteflight\, a music technology company and has also worked at a number of Boston’s fastest growing companies\, including m-Qube (acq. Verisign) and unicorn Art Technology Group (acq. Oracle). Liz began her career with Philips Consumer Electronics in the Netherlands\, where she was responsible for driving innovation in several business divisions across multiple countries. \nElizabeth received her undergraduate degree in Anthropology and International relations from UC Berkeley where she was also a member of the Women’s Varsity Soccer team. She also holds an International MBA from Nijenrode University in the Netherlands and an Executive Coaching degree from William James College. Elizabeth serves as a board member and advisor to several Boston-based startups in IoT\, hardware and software.

SUMMARY:IDSA SEA: Travel in the Time of Covid-19
DESCRIPTION:Designers are no strangers to new constraints. Ask our panelists how the travel industry designs ways to keep us all safer. \nThe world came grinding to a halt as Covid-19 swept the globe. As we navigate everyday life at the peril of becoming ill or spreading illness\, we’ve had to examine how we do anything and everything. New solutions emerge daily\, striving to be safer. Designers flock to where we’re needed most\, called to solve problems shrouded in ambiguity. Today\, IDSA Seattle brings together industry experts to answer your questions about one of our most fundamental activities: travel. In a world that gets smaller daily\, travel only becomes more of a necessity. How do we move swathes of people to new places through shared spaces? How do we keep the world up and running\, facilitating innovation and business\, human connection\, and leisure? Please join us for a hearty discussion! \n  \n \n  \nMeet our panelists: \nLanna Liu leads a team of Product and UI designers at Alaska Airlines with the challenge of creating a seamless day of travel experience. In addition to her work in digital product design\, Lanna has education and practice in industrial design\, service design\, and design research. She applies this knowledge as a lens for looking at experiences holistically and reimagining the intersection between the physical and digital. Lanna is passionate about advancing designers and non-designers alike in the possibilities and successes of utilizing a human centered design process. \nTEAGUEs Senior Director Anthony Harcup has led some of the industry’s most significant aircraft interior innovation programs of the last two decades\, including award winning interiors for Etihad\, JetBlue and Delta\, and leading seat platforms for Safran and Adient.
