SUMMARY:IDSA CLE: Advancing Design Maturity Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join a panel of Cleveland area design experts as they explore the use of design methodologies in business. This free\, virtual event will discuss the past\, present\, and future state of design maturity in varying industries. \nOur three panelists will speak on their experiences of championing design within their own companies and with clients. They’ll provide insight into their design processes\, best practices\, and how to overcome hurdles. \nMeet our panelists:\n \nA graduate of Brigham Young University’s Industrial Design Program\, Christopher has been practicing the craft of industrial design for 26 years. His experience has encompassed a broad range of categories from point of purchase through consumer/business electronics\, luxury hardgoods/softgoods luggage\, wearables\, medical\, and most recently personal lighting\, and automotive consumables. \nHe has received national recognition for design while working in both design consultancy and corporate in-house roles with brands such as ZeroHalliburton and Energizer Holdings. He has also been privileged to work with major clients Cisco\, Sony\, and NEC. His passion is driving design strategy through experience thinking methodologies that create brands with distinct and intense product and end user experiences.\n \nRené Polin has more than 25 years’ experience in the design industry. He is the President and Founder of Balance Innovation & Design – a strategic human-centered innovation and product design consultancy in Cleveland\, Ohio where he is responsible for the vision and overall leadership of the organization. \nHe and his team have helped numerous companies strategically transform their businesses and become future-ready and are responsible for hundreds of successful products from baby toys to medical devices. If you’ve withdrawn money from an ATM\, bathed your infant in a baby bathtub\, hitched up your boat trailer\, or crushed ice in your kitchen blender\, there’s a good chance you’ve used something René and his talented team have developed. Some notable commercial successes are the celebrated Ninja Kitchen line of products\, award-winning banking product and service solutions for Diebold\, and an award-winning line of smart home products for GE Lighting. \nRené’s client list reaches far and wide with clients ranging from Panasonic\, GE\, Illinois Tool Works\, Moen\, Sherwin Williams\, Crown Equipment\, Hasbro\, Lowe’s\, Westfield Insurance\, and Canadian Tire. \nHe speaks about innovation and design regularly\, highlighted by his 2015 TEDxCLE Biomimicry talk. \nRené holds a BFA in Industrial Design from the Cleveland Institute of Art where he has also served on the Board of Directors.\n \nJessica Birchfield has earned over 12 years of experience working within corporate and consulting industrial design teams. While studying industrial design at The Cleveland Institute of Art\, Jessica had the opportunity to intern for Little Tikes and Eleven. After she earned her BFA in 2009\, she went on to work for Spectrum Diversified\, Balance Inc. and independently contracted for a number of brands including Panasonic\, Martha Stewart and Moen. She is currently a principal industrial designer for Moen\, North America’s leading plumbing brand\, where she leads trend strategy. Pioneering this new role within the Moen industrial design team has resulted in focused project goals\, more efficient collaboration between cross-functional teams\, award winning designs and ultimately success in the market. With a passion for all things design\, she has also had the opportunity to collaborate with craftspeople\, artists\, interior designers\, and humanitarian non-profits in Cleveland. Jessica and her husband\, Jerry Birchfield\, welcomed their first baby in June 2020 and are loving this new beautiful chapter in their lives.

SUMMARY:Women in Design SEA: Counterweight
DESCRIPTION:Seattle Women in Design’s inaugural event navigates fostering our own creativity amidst the unknown with Kay Kim and Clare Duffy. \nAs designers\, we’re expected to have an endless supply of creativity\, but how do you cultivate a source for this? For our two speakers\, it comes from exposure to new ideas and willingness to show up in the unknown with curiosity. Come join us for an evening with Kay Kim and Clare Duffy as they answer this question and we kick off Women In Design Seattle!! \n \nAbout the speakers: \nClare Duffy – After graduating from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Industrial Design\, Clare worked full time for Motiv Design and contracted for Conduit Projects before moving to Washington to join Precor’s Product Development team. She enjoys collaborating with multidisciplinary departments to anticipate customer needs across international and economic markets\, prioritizing accessibility and usability in every design solution. As a Co-Chair of Precor’s Diversity\, Inclusion\, Equity\, and Belonging Council\, she focuses primarily on the expansion of tools and processes to assess\, address\, and prevent bias and discrimination within corporate culture. \nKay Kim – Kay is currently a senior industrial designer at Starbucks as part of building the first ID team and defining the industrial design strategy\, ranging from equipment development\, store design\, to future innovation strategy. Prior to Starbucks\, Kay studied Industrial Design at the University of Washington\, interned at Tactile\, then spent several years at TEAGUE doing extensive research by traveling around the world and designing various products including consumer electronics\, aviation\, medical products\, and space travel. Besides her work hours\, Kay always tries to find a way to do side hustles when she needs a creative escape.

SUMMARY:IDSA SYR: Designing a Post-Pandemic\, Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:What is sustainability? How can we design better futures? Studies have shown that following major economic downturns like the one caused by the COVID -19 Pandemic\, the rate of resource consumption and environmental degradation increases significantly. With scientists predicting that we only have a decade left before irreversible climate damage\, how can designers create products and services for a sustainable future? \nJoin Sayeh as she discusses topics that have helped her understand sustainability and range from the foundational way we value nature and define sustainability\, to the importance of local economies. \nSayeh Dastgheib-Beheshti\, IDSA\, is the Toronto Vice Chair of the IDSA Central New York Chapter. She is the co-founder and Chief Product Officer of a Silicon Valley start-up currently in stealth mode\, and researcher focused on sustainability. Her previous industry experience includes designing motion capture systems for movies\, automotive interiors\, aerospace interiors\, and consumer products. With over 15 years of experience teaching in higher education\, her research explores the intersection of product design\, systems thinking and ecological economics to create critical pedagogy for design education. \nSayeh holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from Art Centre College of Design in Switzerland\, and a master’s degree in environmental studies from York University in Canada. In addition to her IDSA professional membership\, she is a member of the Sustainable Consumption Research Action Initiative (SCORAI)\, and Canadian Society for Ecological Economics (CANSEE).

SUMMARY:IDSA LVL: Speculative Characters for Visual Inflection
DESCRIPTION:In the age of emojis\, type and image work in tandem to bolster our typographic voices\, conveying our wide range of emotions. What if new punctuation could formally articulate the meaning of a message as conveyed through gesture and expression? Engaging with design as a medium for inquiry\, Cinelli proposes a new set of characters to supplement our existing typefaces\, attempting to make the rich complexities of verbal and nonverbal conversation visible. \nPresented by Mia Cinelli is an Assistant Professor of Art Studio and Digital Design at the University of Kentucky. Her design practice encompasses an eclectic span of poetic and pragmatic products\, installations\, and graphics which have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Recently\, her typographic works have been acknowledged with Best in Festival for New Work at DesignTO (2020)\, a Graphis Silver award for typeface design (2018)\, a Society of Typographic Arts “STA 100” award (2019)\, and a Communication Arts Typography award (2020). With an inquiry-driven practice\, she is passionate about—and continually excited by— the possibilities of visual communication and human-centered design.

SUMMARY:IDSA SF: Multidisciplinary Teams\, Multicultural Design
DESCRIPTION:Designers face daily various psychological\, sociological and cultural challenges. How important is diversity in a team especially when designing for a global audience? And how to change our mindset to embrace “differences“? Join us on Thursday and hear Grace Hina Lee share her experience working for global brands such as Samsung and Logitech. \nGrace Lee is an industrial design leader with over 10 years of experience. She is currently a design principal at Logitech and has prior experience with Samsung\, Astro Studios\, and more. She is a designer that is passionate about building products that delight people and working with brands that speak to real users. In addition to providing a careful design sensibility and technical craft\, she finds great pleasure in the challenge of telling relatable\, emotive stories that bridge the gap between a brand’s voice and tactical product benefits. Grace approaches her work with the same attitude with which she approaches her life: her purpose is to challenge herself with complex yet meaningful problems\, empower those around her\, and most of all\, to have fun along the way.

SUMMARY:IDSA SEA: Update China: Connecting Tradition & innovation with design
DESCRIPTION:Min Chen started his training in Chinese calligraphy at a very young age and has maintained an interest in traditional Chinese arts and crafts to this day. In 2001\, he went to study at the Köln International School of Design (KISD) and completed his Bachelor’s degree at the Design Academy Eindhoven. He then went to the Domus Academy in Milan for his MA in Design\, graduating with distinction. \nIn 2010\, he returned to Hangzhou\, China to set up his design office. His work ranges from the design of objects to technological products and interior architecture. Finding the best bonding point of tradition and modernization\, East and West has always been what ‘Chen Min Office’ believes in. With this philosophy he translates traditional craftsmanship into modern furniture and objects. His work gained him international recognition and has been exhibited all over the world including the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan\, the National Museum of China in Beijing and the Louvre in Paris. \nEarly in 2020 he joined the initiative Create-Cures and connected an international group of designers aiming to promote the development of public health in a designer’s way as a reaction to the global pandemic. The work displayed at www.create-cures.com gained a lot of public interest and has recently been exhibited at Design China in Beijing. \nMin will present his internationally recognized work and discuss the philosophy that guides Chen Min Office for products ranging from technological to architectural and furniture. He’ll help us understand the balancing point between modern and traditional\, Eastern and Western\, and reconcile them in design.
