SUMMARY:IDSA PVD: Outsiders on the Inside Mini Conference - The Future of Womxn’s Health
DESCRIPTION:Not so long ago\, the only acceptable women’s health topics at conferences and investor meetings were pregnancy and breastfeeding. Fertility\, menstruation\, menopause\, and masturbation–huge parts of a woman’s life–were at best considered fringe and at worst taboo. However\, thanks to a growing group of founders and companies on a mission to move these topics into the mainstream\, we’re finally making progress. \nAs the women’s health gold rush heats up and male-dominated VC’s and founders begin to cash-in\, our challenge is to ensure that it’s women\, femmes\, and people with periods that continue to drive the conversation about the future of the industry. \nFor the last session of our 3-part conference series\, we’ve invited four women on the front lines of the womxn’s health movement to share their experiences. From what it’s like to pitch a menopause wearable to a team of male investors\, to the challenges of leading a culture shift and normalizing topics like menstruation and masturbation\, our incredible panelists will be sharing their stories in this unfiltered and candid conversation. \nThis conversation is part of Loft’s Outsiders on the Insiders Mini Conference\, a free\, three-part event taking place on May 20th. The goal of these events is to provide access to important conversations and give a platform to unique perspectives and voices. \nJeanette Numbers is an experienced design thinker + leader based in Providence\, RI. As Cofounder of Loft\, Jeanette specializes in creating visually compelling\, human-centered design solutions that are rooted in purpose and driven by research. Jeanette’s work spans dozens of global brands and a wide variety of industries. She’s had proven success both in and outside of the corporate environment\, leading teams in strategic design thinking\, digital and physical product design\, and final product commercialization. Her career has taken her to New York\, San Francisco\, Boston\, and finally to Providence\, where Loft’s corporate headquarters are based. As a longtime champion for local mentorship and community-building\, Jeanette is excited to build on her vision for a collaborative and authentic design culture as chair of the Providence IDSA chapter. \nAmanda French is the co-founder and CEO of Emme\, a healthtech company that is revolutionizing birth control. Emme invented the first smart\, connected pill case for birth control pill management. Amanda has over a decade of experience bringing innovative products to the market with a particular focus on women’s health. One of the first innovations she helped develop was a product that facilitated the distribution of antiretrovirals to mothers in the developing world to prevent the rates of HIV transmission from mother to child postpartum. This product was recognized directly by Hilary Clinton and won USAID’s Saving Lives at Birth Grand Challenge. Prior to founding Emme\, Amanda developed breakthrough heart valve technology as an R&D engineer with Edwards Lifesciences\, where she also held roles in program management\, manufacturing\, and marketing through the Technical Development Program. She went on to develop state-of-the-art hearing aids at Earlens. She brings her prior experience of developing innovative medical technology to drive the advancement of innovation in women’s health at Emme. Amanda was a 2016-2017 Innovation Fellow at the Stanford-Byers Center for Biodesign\, and a Ferolyn Fellow in 2018-2019 with the Fogarty Institute for Innovation. She holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University. \nElizabeth Gadza is the CEO of Embr Labs\, a Boston-based wearables company that developed the Embr Wave – a wrist-worn\, personal thermostat that improves sleep\, relieves anxiety and helps with hot flashes. Prior to Embr Labs\, Liz was a member of several founding teams including Doni\, a fintech company\, and Noteflight\, a music technology company and has also worked at a number of Boston’s fastest growing companies\, including m-Qube (acq. Verisign) and unicorn Art Technology Group (acq. Oracle). Liz began her career with Philips Consumer Electronics in the Netherlands\, where she was responsible for driving innovation in several business divisions across multiple countries. Elizabeth received her undergraduate degree in Anthropology and International relations from UC Berkeley where she was also a member of the Women’s Varsity Soccer team. She also holds an International MBA from Nijenrode University in the Netherlands and an Executive Coaching degree from William James College. Elizabeth serves as a board member and advisor to several Boston-based startups in IoT\, hardware and software. \nKristina Cahojova\, CEO at Kegg. Kristina earned her double Master’s Degree in International Management and Business. Administration from CEMS in Europe. She is fluent in 5 languages thanks to her international study and work experience in Germany\, Austria\, Taiwan\, Spain and the Czech Republic. For her first business venture\, TailorMySuit\, she was awarded as the Student Entrepreneur of 2011. She continued her career in London\, where she led growth at AppyParking. After that\, she joined the marketing team at Amazon and then moved to C2C marketing at eBay in San Jose\, California. Inspired by struggles with tracking her fertility combining with her experiences in e-commerce\, she realized that there is a demand for a certain product\, which does not yet exist. \nTi Chang is a design entrepreneur and activist passionate about designing better products for women. She is the co-founder and VP of Design of CRAVE\, a San Francisco-based company specializing in aesthetic pleasure products. Ti leads the design vision for the company’s full line of products which has won international design awards and has led CRAVE to mainstream partnerships with the likes of Nordstrom\, MoMA Design Store\, Standard Hotel\, Goop\, and Saint Laurent. Ti is credited with\, and perhaps best known for\, mainstreaming the category of sex jewelry with the introduction of the iconic Vesper necklace in 2014\, one of the most celebrated and iconic pleasure products changing the conversation around pleasure. Its viral duality as both a public and private object has continued to create connections and conversations around normalizing pleasure — both supportive and powerful—in a way no other product has. In 2020\, Ti co-founded Design Allyship to provide anyone with actionable resources to improve the condition of historically marginalized designers in the industrial & product design industry. She is the chair of Women in Design section of Industrial Designers Society of America\, where she supports the community of industrial designers and women in design. She is also on the advisory board for San Francisco Design Week\, Reimagine\, and CRAVE Foundation for Women. Ti holds an M.A. in Design Products from the Royal College of Art in London and a B.S. in Industrial Design from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

SUMMARY:IDSA PVD: Outsiders on the Inside Mini Conference - Destigmatize and Normalize: Womxn’s Health Products are Here to Stay
DESCRIPTION:The female body is capable of doing amazing things. From menstruation to childbirth to breastfeeding and beyond\, women’s bodies and their functions should be respected and celebrated. Let’s be clear though: the experience of being a woman isn’t easy at all\, and a lot of this is largely due to bias and blindspots that affect everything from the tampon tax and maternity leave to female contraception and pelvic health. \nAs women find ways to drive new conversations in the healthcare space there has been a push to develop solutions that make being in a female body a little bit easier. These efforts have led to a boom of innovative products entering the market made for women by women that challenge the status quo. Thanks to innovators like our four panelists\, we’re entering a new era where the shame and stigma that used to come with talking about and purchasing womxn’s health products is being questioned and rooted out. \nOver the course of this panel we’ll dive into what it’s like to create a uniquely female product in a male-dominated field\, what inspired these female founders to step up and make a difference in the womxn’s health space\, and so much more. \nAna Lee is the technical co-founder of Lioness\, the women-led sexual wellness company that built the world’s first and only smart vibrator that improves understanding of sexual pleasure and orgasms through biofeedback data and science. Anna was previously a mechanical engineer at Amazon\, launching the Amazon Dash Button’s original concept and the Kindle Voyage Page Press Technology. She was most recently named 2020’s Forbes 30 Under 30 as well as Paper Magazine’s Asian Women Creators You Need to Know. She is a big advocate in Lioness’s mission to expand understanding and research in sexual health\, and destigmatize female sexuality. \nMichelle Wu is an executive leader with 20 years of experience in the medical device and life sciences industries with roles in product and process development\, manufacturing\, and quality. Most recently\, Michelle was on the executive leadership team at Ximedica\, a design and development medical technology consultancy based in Rhode Island. Michelle has a history of successful medical device product development\, strategic planning and execution\, building teams\, process evolution\, and managing organizational change. She values a collaborative and diverse\, equitable\, and inclusive environment\, believing that diverse perspectives lead to the best ideas\, more cohesive teams\, and better results. Michelle is currently an independent consultant at Wu Consulting\, LLC. \nSamantha Rudolph is the co-founder and CEO of Babyation\, a venture-backed startup that creates bold solutions at the intersection of healthcare\, data and technology. Babyation thoughtfully improves products for the most intimate areas of the body so that women can live their best life as they work\, play\, parent\, and age. Prior to Babyation\, Sam spent nine years as a serial entrepreneur within ESPN\, where she launched a variety of products\, departments and technologies. She helped shape the company’s social media presence and strategy in the early days of Facebook and Twitter\, and she staged a live boxing match from the floor of the Consumer Electronics Show. Sam was also part of the launch team at ESPN’s Los Angeles division\, and she oversaw the business development team responsible for evaluating new technologies. Sam subsequently leveraged her expertise in sports data and video platforms as a consultant for private equity firms and management consulting companies. Sam graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania\, where she received dual concentrations in Operations and Information Management (Decision Processes) and Management (Strategic Focus). Sam is a lead mentor for Stadia Ventures startup accelerator and is the treasurer of the St. Louis Breastfeeding Coalition. She is also mom to two boys\, Exton and Oden. \nTracy MacNeal is the President & CEO of Materna Medical. Tracy is a chemical engineer and healthcare executive with a specialty in commercializing medical devices. SUMMARY:IDSA PVD: Outsiders on the Inside Mini Conference - Digital Health vs. Digital Wellbeing: How Much is Too Much
DESCRIPTION:The age of digital health promises many upsides: phones that can connect us to our PCP for a quick video chat\, apps to track literally every data point of our lives\, and wearables that provide interventions for when those data points go askew. \nDespite the obvious gains\, there are some elements of our increasingly digital healthcare system that need to be better understood. From idea to design to rollout\, we’re asking: who’s still being left out of the conversation? Where is all this confidential data going? How much technology is too much? For better or for worse\, our relationship with our devices is\, for many of us\, one of the most personal\, intimate relationships of our lives at this moment–so we better be sure it’s a healthy one. \nJoin Loft and an all-star panel of industry experts and innovators for an exploration of digital health’s intersection–or collision–with digital wellbeing. At Philips\, she designs next generation AI driven healthcare diagnostic products\, primarily for medical professionals in radiology and cardiology. The teams she works on are inherently multidisciplinary: designers\, doctors\, researchers\, scientists\, business people\, and technologists. Outside of Philips she was the designer for a Brown Medicine project that developed a new way for patients to communicate pain to doctors using physical objects\, designed a proof of concept for an augmented reality-based tool to map neurological biopsy sites and worked on improving service delivery to Boston’s addiction and homelessness community. \nDanielle Snyder is a Director of Service Design & Strategy at Humana\, where she has been for about 2 years. She is tasked with building out a new experience transformation team that will help to redesign the organization toward a more human centric operating model. By night\, she is a new-ish mom of a human baby (17 month-old Maya) and a tenured mom of a Boston Terrier fur baby (9 year old Tux). Perhaps unsurprisingly\, skilling up at her night job has helped significantly with her day job. \nMargaux Boyaval is the Digital Product and UX Director at Teva Pharmacuticals. Margaux’s passion is in creating transformational connected health experiences for people striving for health. She has embedded CX and UX design teams and principles in large organizations across consumer health\, medical device\, hospital systems\, digital health\, and pharma marketing. She has shown that success that comes when teams develop strategies & solutions with patients’ and business goals in mind. \nMegan Wimmer is a Senior Design Thinking Leader at GE Healthcare\, where she is part of a global team responsible for crafting and facilitating Design Thinking workshops focused on product\, service\, and business strategy innovation. Each day\, Megan strives to enable breakthrough solutions rooted in empathy by guiding teams to look at problems differently and use the most basic tools and their imaginations to investigate\, uncover\, and explore ideas they never thought possible. In a few short years\, Megan and team have progressed Design Thinking from a relative unknown within GE Healthcare to a recognized career path and skill set valued throughout the broader GE corporation. Megan also helps project manage custom Adventure Series installations\, designed to improve the radiology experience for pediatric patients\, families and staff. \nPrior to her current role\, Megan spent 5+ years designing Computed Tomography (CT) scanners and completed the Edison Engineering Development Program.
