SUMMARY:IDSA HTX: Longevity: Sustainability by Design\, Maintenance\, and Planning
DESCRIPTION:As a child\, Brenden Macaluso was fascinated with mechanical objects. He began repairing engines and vintage machines at age 10 and has never stopped. Since 2007\, Brenden has been working to apply sustainability practices to Industrial Design. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003 and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from the University of Houston in 2008. His thesis project\, Recompute\, examined applied sustainability via the product life cycle and was globally recognized. He founded Common Motor Collective in 2013\, a support company empowering DIY users to repair and maintain vintage motorcycles by providing access to obsolete parts\, technical information\, and active knowledge exchange. \nAbstract: \nHumans have been producing mass-manufactured goods for about a century and the landfill has become the de facto “end of the road” for many objects. As users\, we never consider what road our objects are traveling down; as designers\, we don’t always consider that our work will eventually become garbage. With commoditization\, planned obsolescence\, and the “short sell” steering the direction of product development\, the cycle of “produce\, consume and discard” continues to increase in scale and speed. \nApplying sustainability principles to industrial design must go beyond the simple ideas of materials used and the energy consumption of the object. The considerations for applied sustainability in ID need to examine the granularity of a product’s lifecycle including initial energy & resource investment\, manufacturing processes\, projected service timeline\, parts\, repairability\, support service\, knowledge documentation\, and the foreseeable contexts of human interactions with the object. The idea of “Long Life Design” creates objects that maximize utility over time and provide the proper “end of the road” actions. \nIn this presentation we will take a look at examples of applied sustainable ideas and seek to answer the following questions: \nWho is responsible for dealing with the things that have been made\, the producers\, retailers\, users? Is there a better place for objects beyond the landfill? What do we do with the things we’ve already made?

SUMMARY:IDSA TOR: Carbon Neutrality in Makerspaces
DESCRIPTION:Sheng-Hung Lee\, IDSA will present his research into the creation of the Circular Makerspace Evaluation Toolkit currently in development at MIT. \nThe practices of making and learning by doing remain a cornerstone of education today. In the context of carbon neutrality\, we extend a typical “making” stage into “sustainable making” and “meaningful making” on colleges campuses for the procurement process\, material selection\, students’ awareness\, pedagogical design\, and makerspace system. The goal of the study is to offer a shared sustainable vision with short-term solutions and long-term goals by applying circular design methodology and human-centered design to reduce the carbon footprint of makerspaces. We use MIT as a testbed to prototype carbon-neutrality-related experiments to evaluate concepts and validate ideas. \nThe Circular Makerspace Evaluation Toolkit (CMET) created in this paper will not only empower future generations of teachers\, professionals\, policymakers and community leaders\, but scale to industry and society. CMET breaks down the evaluation process into five stages and ten environmentally responsible elements to quantify\, measure\, and celebrate the value of circular makerspaces to users/makers\, and inspire them and other makerspaces around the globe to view “circular” as a new creative currency of carbon neutrality\, thus motivating users/makers to create feasible plans\, change their behaviors\, cultivate sustainable maker culture and\, through their makerspaces\, make an invaluable contribution to the Circular Economy. \nRecorded February 8\, 2022

SUMMARY:IDSA TOR: Taking a Concept to Production
DESCRIPTION:Our moderated roundtable explores the similarities and differences between designing tangible/digital products in contemporary practice. When the industrial design profession emerged as a result of the industrial revolution in the early 19th century\, it was initially focused on mass-produced consumer products. Over time\, as products have evolved to become more than simple physical entities\, the profession has evolved as well. Today industrial designers are involved in the creation of systems that include not only products\, but also their services\, interactions and experiences. \nOur roundtable consists of four panelists who represent various aspects of contemporary industrial design practice from consumer products\, experience & interaction design\, systems and services design as well as emerging technologies. Each panelist will present a Pecha-kucha style slideshow that tells the story of a design project\, providing the attendees with an insight into the processes and steps that led to the final product. \nThe presentations will be followed by a moderated roundtable discussion that will centre around the similarities and differences that exist between designing tangible/digital products\, systems and experiences. There will also be an opportunity for audience members to submit questions for the panelists. \nOur distinguished panelists are: \n\nJohn Arnott. ACID\, IDSA – President of Canada’s professional industrial design association\, ACID\nDr. Mark Chignell – Director of the Interactive Media Lab and the founder of Centivizer Inc.\nDr. Dennis L. Kappen – Professor of Applied Sciences and Technology at Humber College\nNicole Norris\, MDes (pronouns she/they) – Manager of the Centre for Changemaking and Social Innovation at Georgian College.\n\nRecorded January 25\, 2022

SUMMARY:Medical Section: Human Factors for Designers: Sensation & Perception Pt 2
DESCRIPTION:Learn how the mind works\, and its implications for the design of controls\, displays\, IFU’s\, information architecture design\, and more. \nCognitive Human Factors for Designers \nMany product designers have never taken a university-level class on cognitive human factors or cognitive science. This set of one-hour workshops is designed to remedy that. It provides a crash course on how the mind works\, and its implications for the design of controls\, displays\, instruction for use\, information architecture design\, and other factors. \nAbout the Instructor: Russell J. Branaghan\, PhD\, is President of Research Collective\, a Healthcare Human Factors and User Experience consulting firm and laboratory in Tempe\, AZ. Russ also serves as Emeritus Faculty at Arizona State University\, Visiting Professor of Human Factors at Northwestern University\, and Research Affiliate at Mayo Clinic. His teaching has been recognized with awards from ASU and Northwestern. Russ has published over 100 journal articles\, books\, book chapters\, and conference proceedings papers. His most recent book (with Joe O’Brian\, Emily Hildebrand\, and Bryant Foster) is Humanizing Healthcare – Human Factors for Medical Device Design.

SUMMARY:IDSA CLE: Designed in Cleveland
DESCRIPTION:IDSA Cleveland will host an evening celebrating the great design that has been developed all around our region. It will be an evening of community building\, networking\, and inspirational content for area industrial designers. This will be a catered event and will be hosted in Moen’s recently renovated first floor atrium and design studio. \nWe will have three presentations and product displays for viewing. Presenters include Balance Inc.\, Spectrum Diversified Designs\, and Industrial Design Outreach. Come check out the work of other Cleveland based designers/companies\, be inspired\, and chat with them and learn about their process. \nTo make this a successful event\, we’re asking designers to participate with a product display (not required for attendance). We hope that you and/or your colleagues would be willing to share some of your great design work that has recently gone to market or has been released to the public. This is a great opportunity to share with the Cleveland design community what you and your company are capable of. Your table display can showcase any of\, but not limited to\, the following: recent case studies\, a design-centric strategy in the works\, presentation of an award-winning design\, a recent success for your respective company\, or the best of your latest work.
