DESCRIPTION:What is Your Food Waste Solution? A new World Wildlife Fund report estimates U.S. school food waste totals 530\,000 tons per year and costs as much as $9.7 million a day to manage (39 pounds of food waste and 19 gallons of milk thrown out per school per year)\, based on the results from a 46-school sample across nine cities. \nJoin IDSA’s Sustainability Section during Circular City Week to brainstorm on how to create systems-based solutions that reduces food waste in public schools by generating circular economy concepts that engage and empower the students themselves. \nEnjoy the recording:

SUMMARY:IDSA BOS: Universal Design - Design for Extreme Users in Extreme Conditions
DESCRIPTION:In an era of transformation\, humanity is facing extreme weather conditions\, climate change\, aging issues\, and other complex and systemic challenges. How do designers equip themselves by learning new knowledge in context\, leveraging the emerging technologies\, changing our current education system\, and adapting our mindset and skill sets? Design 4 EUEC wants to provide a fresh human-centered perspective with love and comprehensive considerations from social\, environmental\, and economic perspectives to revisit these most difficult social-technological challenges. The virtual program will feature 4 outstanding speakers to be announced. \nWhile “ID” in IDSA stands for “Industrial Design”\, Sheng-Hung and Jonathon envision a chapter that transcends design discipline boundaries and brings designers for all arenas into dialogue. So\, “ID” becomes “Inclusive Design”\, with an interest in gathering interests and passionate people designers and thinkers together. It echoes our topic “Design for Extreme User in Extreme Conditions (Design 4 EUEC)”

SUMMARY:IDSA ATX: Figma for Industrial Designers pt2
DESCRIPTION:For those of you who may not have heard of Figma: Figma is web-based a vector graphics editor and prototyping tool for macOS and Windows. \nUsing Figma\, a design lead can check in to see what the team is designing in real time by simply opening a shared file. If a designer somehow misinterprets the brief or user story\, this feature allows the design lead to intervene\, correct course\, and save countless hours that would have otherwise been wasted. \nIn other words\, really cool useful software for collaboration! \nRonal Infante will host a a 180 minute course split over two days on April 21-22nd from 5:30 -7:00 pm each day.

SUMMARY:WID San Francisco: Belonging
DESCRIPTION:In this panel discussion\, we will explore new frontiers of belonging: what are some barriers we are seeing + how might we break those down? Can we design more inclusive spaces that prioritize our psychological selves as much as our physical selves? Will technology create more opportunities for digital equity and what role do we play? \nOur ideas of what ‘Belonging’ looks like and what it means to us are always shifting\, and have shifted exponentially during the course of the pandemic. As we entered a moment of isolation from others\, we sought out alternative ways to bring others into our lives. These narratives extend above and beyond ourselves; they transcend the physical world around us\, our local and global communities\, and the technologies we use to communicate with one another. \nPanelists: \n\nRimma Boshernitsan – Founder & CEO\, DIALOGUE\nJen Casimiro (she/her) – Global Talent Director and Head of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion\, IDEO\nLaura Guido-Clark – Founder\, Love Good Color & Project Color Corps\n\nRecorded on March 24\, 2022

SUMMARY:IDSA HTX: Longevity: Sustainability by Design\, Maintenance\, and Planning
DESCRIPTION:As a child\, Brenden Macaluso was fascinated with mechanical objects. He began repairing engines and vintage machines at age 10 and has never stopped. Since 2007\, Brenden has been working to apply sustainability practices to Industrial Design. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003 and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from the University of Houston in 2008. His thesis project\, Recompute\, examined applied sustainability via the product life cycle and was globally recognized. He founded Common Motor Collective in 2013\, a support company empowering DIY users to repair and maintain vintage motorcycles by providing access to obsolete parts\, technical information\, and active knowledge exchange. \nAbstract: \nHumans have been producing mass-manufactured goods for about a century and the landfill has become the de facto “end of the road” for many objects. As users\, we never consider what road our objects are traveling down; as designers\, we don’t always consider that our work will eventually become garbage. With commoditization\, planned obsolescence\, and the “short sell” steering the direction of product development\, the cycle of “produce\, consume and discard” continues to increase in scale and speed. \nApplying sustainability principles to industrial design must go beyond the simple ideas of materials used and the energy consumption of the object. The considerations for applied sustainability in ID need to examine the granularity of a product’s lifecycle including initial energy & resource investment\, manufacturing processes\, projected service timeline\, parts\, repairability\, support service\, knowledge documentation\, and the foreseeable contexts of human interactions with the object. The idea of “Long Life Design” creates objects that maximize utility over time and provide the proper “end of the road” actions. \nIn this presentation we will take a look at examples of applied sustainable ideas and seek to answer the following questions: \nWho is responsible for dealing with the things that have been made\, the producers\, retailers\, users? Is there a better place for objects beyond the landfill? What do we do with the things we’ve already made?

SUMMARY:IDSA TOR: Carbon Neutrality in Makerspaces
DESCRIPTION:Sheng-Hung Lee\, IDSA will present his research into the creation of the Circular Makerspace Evaluation Toolkit currently in development at MIT. \nThe practices of making and learning by doing remain a cornerstone of education today. In the context of carbon neutrality\, we extend a typical “making” stage into “sustainable making” and “meaningful making” on colleges campuses for the procurement process\, material selection\, students’ awareness\, pedagogical design\, and makerspace system. The goal of the study is to offer a shared sustainable vision with short-term solutions and long-term goals by applying circular design methodology and human-centered design to reduce the carbon footprint of makerspaces. We use MIT as a testbed to prototype carbon-neutrality-related experiments to evaluate concepts and validate ideas. \nThe Circular Makerspace Evaluation Toolkit (CMET) created in this paper will not only empower future generations of teachers\, professionals\, policymakers and community leaders\, but scale to industry and society. CMET breaks down the evaluation process into five stages and ten environmentally responsible elements to quantify\, measure\, and celebrate the value of circular makerspaces to users/makers\, and inspire them and other makerspaces around the globe to view “circular” as a new creative currency of carbon neutrality\, thus motivating users/makers to create feasible plans\, change their behaviors\, cultivate sustainable maker culture and\, through their makerspaces\, make an invaluable contribution to the Circular Economy. \nRecorded February 8\, 2022
