SUMMARY:IDSA TOR: Discovering Impactful Design Challenges in the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bilton will share examples of projects and designs by CGEN students that have led to positive impact in communities in the Global South. Design is often conducted in the developed world for the top of the income pyramid. However\, more than half of the world’s population earns less than $10 per day\, posing unique design challenges. Designers from the developed world are often out of step with the needs of the developing world resulting in designs that don’t address the core problem or miss important local factors\, resulting in failure when implemented in the developing world context. \nThis talk will discuss the challenges associated with the collaborative problem identification\, design\, validation\, and manufacturing of technologies aimed to improve quality of life in the developing world. Work currently being done by the Centre for Global Engineering (CGEN) at the University of Toronto in the areas of food engineering\, improved irrigation technologies\, drinking water\, and sustainable sanitation will highlight these challenges and present the potential impact of appropriate technologies. \nEnjoy the recording:

SUMMARY:IDSA HTX: Why diverse perspectives matter in healthcare design
DESCRIPTION:Kristi Bartlett is the director of product development at ZIBRIO\, the Balance Company\, where she designs products for fall prevention in aging. She became interested in design for healthcare after her experiences caring for a family member with medical needs opened her eyes to the lack of consideration for patients and home users in medical design. Kristi holds an M.S. in Industrial Design from the University of Houston and a B.A. in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Rice University. \nKristi is currently pursuing a PhD in Technology at Purdue University. Her primary research area is spatial thinking\, or creative thinking in three-dimensions. Kristi also researchers the dynamics in design education and industry that contribute to its lack of diversity. She believes that the design field needs to change so that product teams better reflect the diversity of real-world users. \nWhat do ageism\, racism\, ableism\, and sexism have in common? These social issues all overlap with the topic of healthcare design. In this talk\, I will introduce social science theories like critical race theory\, critical disability studies\, and feminist theory\, and explain how they connect to healthcare design. I believe that interdisciplinary work is key to advancing equity issues in the design profession. Therefore\, I all designers can benefit from learning social science theory and applying it to our work\, and end users will benefit too. Whether you are interested in healthcare design specifically\, or interested in diversity issues in the design field in general\, this talk is for you.

SUMMARY:IDSA BOS: Universal Design - Design for Extreme Users in Extreme Conditions
DESCRIPTION:In an era of transformation\, humanity is facing extreme weather conditions\, climate change\, aging issues\, and other complex and systemic challenges. How do designers equip themselves by learning new knowledge in context\, leveraging the emerging technologies\, changing our current education system\, and adapting our mindset and skill sets? Design 4 EUEC wants to provide a fresh human-centered perspective with love and comprehensive considerations from social\, environmental\, and economic perspectives to revisit these most difficult social-technological challenges. The virtual program will feature 4 outstanding speakers to be announced. \nWhile “ID” in IDSA stands for “Industrial Design”\, Sheng-Hung and Jonathon envision a chapter that transcends design discipline boundaries and brings designers for all arenas into dialogue. So\, “ID” becomes “Inclusive Design”\, with an interest in gathering interests and passionate people designers and thinkers together. It echoes our topic “Design for Extreme User in Extreme Conditions (Design 4 EUEC)”

SUMMARY:IDSA ATX: Figma for Industrial Designers pt2
DESCRIPTION:For those of you who may not have heard of Figma: Figma is web-based a vector graphics editor and prototyping tool for macOS and Windows. \nUsing Figma\, a design lead can check in to see what the team is designing in real time by simply opening a shared file. If a designer somehow misinterprets the brief or user story\, this feature allows the design lead to intervene\, correct course\, and save countless hours that would have otherwise been wasted. \nIn other words\, really cool useful software for collaboration! \nRonal Infante will host a a 180 minute course split over two days on April 21-22nd from 5:30 -7:00 pm each day.
