SUMMARY:IDSA TOR: Project Arrow: Annual Mobility Design Competition
DESCRIPTION:IDSA-Toronto chapter has partnered with APMA\, Autodesk\, Meta and Pininfarina in this year’s Project Arrow student design competition and welcomes Colin as he discusses past entries and the theme for the 2023 competition. \nBackground: \nIn 2020\, the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA) of Canada launched the first\, original\, full-build zero-emission concept vehicle named Project Arrow. \nAn all-Canadian effort\, it will be designed\, engineered and built by our world-class automotive supply sector and post-secondary institutions. To answer the Prime Minister’s call for a Zero-Emissions future by 2050\, this project will bring together the best of the best of Canada’s electric-drive\, alternative-fuel\, connected and autonomous and light-weight technology companies. \nColin will share entries from past competitions and outline the 2023 competition theme\, open to students in post-secondary design programs across Canada. \nBio: \nColin Singh Dhillon is one of Canada’s leading automotive innovation and design authorities\, a globally sought-after voice on the ever-changing future of mobility and the holder of multiple patents. Today\, as the Chief Technical Officer for Canada’s Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association and the Project lead on Project Arrow: Canada’s first electric concept vehicle. His work in the fields of Connected\, Autonomous\, Security and Electrification of mobility (CASE) allows Colin to guide the automotive sector through the digital revolution. \n  \nOutside of work\, Colin is the President of the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada\, and a #1 Best-selling author of the book\, The Three Houses\, A Journey to a Better Life. \n \nIDSA Toronto Project Arrow: Annual Mobility Design Competition – Colin Dhillon from IDSA on Vimeo.

SUMMARY:IDSA MKE: Disability + Design
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the recording of this event. \nThis panel discussion will highlight the design education barriers faced by students with disabilities\, and the ways which the industrial design community can help support equitable academic opportunities. This session is proudly presented by the IDSA Milwaukee (MKE) chapter. \nIndustrial Design education is a demanding pursuit for all students\, but it has seldom been attainable for those with disabilities due to rigid curriculum requirements. While students with disabilities have the same passion and skill for design as their peers\, they often have unique needs and circumstances related to the delicate balance of health and academics. The success of these students can be enabled through individualized accommodations\, open communication with educators\, and flexibility on working methods and environments. Each person involved with the industrial design profession has the power to contribute to accessible design education by considering new perspectives and spreading awareness. Join our panel of students\, graduates\, and educators as they share their stories and answer questions about navigating academia with disabilities. \n

SUMMARY:IDSA CHI: The Unknown Histories of Chicago Industrial Design
DESCRIPTION:Author and curator Vicki Matranga has researched Chicago’s design history since the 1990s. Get introduced to designers who served clients in consumer\, commercial and industrial markets during 1920-1970. Early Chicago designers\, some with little formal education but with entrepreneurial ambition\, created products that solved problems of their times. Their work can inspire and influence you in your career as you develop solutions for today’s needs.

SUMMARY:IDSA ATX: Safe Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Safe Spaces – A sketching event coinciding with Pride month. Designers are encouraged to gather at Easy Tiger (north location) to sketch and discuss what the idea of a “safe space” is not just in terms of LGBTQ+ but maybe society as a whole\, and how we can create products within a space that unifies humanity. \nWhile this sounds serious (and at times it may be?) the goal is to have a fun\, safe space to discuss and sketch out ideas while having a few drinks. \nCome join IDSA ATX from 7-closing at Easy Tiger north location. We will have paper and pens available unless you want to bring your own.

SUMMARY:IDSA TOR: Discovering Impactful Design Challenges in the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bilton will share examples of projects and designs by CGEN students that have led to positive impact in communities in the Global South. Design is often conducted in the developed world for the top of the income pyramid. However\, more than half of the world’s population earns less than $10 per day\, posing unique design challenges. Designers from the developed world are often out of step with the needs of the developing world resulting in designs that don’t address the core problem or miss important local factors\, resulting in failure when implemented in the developing world context. \nThis talk will discuss the challenges associated with the collaborative problem identification\, design\, validation\, and manufacturing of technologies aimed to improve quality of life in the developing world. Work currently being done by the Centre for Global Engineering (CGEN) at the University of Toronto in the areas of food engineering\, improved irrigation technologies\, drinking water\, and sustainable sanitation will highlight these challenges and present the potential impact of appropriate technologies. \nEnjoy the recording:

SUMMARY:IDSA HTX: Why diverse perspectives matter in healthcare design
DESCRIPTION:Kristi Bartlett is the director of product development at ZIBRIO\, the Balance Company\, where she designs products for fall prevention in aging. She became interested in design for healthcare after her experiences caring for a family member with medical needs opened her eyes to the lack of consideration for patients and home users in medical design. Kristi holds an M.S. in Industrial Design from the University of Houston and a B.A. in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Rice University. \nKristi is currently pursuing a PhD in Technology at Purdue University. Her primary research area is spatial thinking\, or creative thinking in three-dimensions. Kristi also researchers the dynamics in design education and industry that contribute to its lack of diversity. She believes that the design field needs to change so that product teams better reflect the diversity of real-world users. \nWhat do ageism\, racism\, ableism\, and sexism have in common? These social issues all overlap with the topic of healthcare design. In this talk\, I will introduce social science theories like critical race theory\, critical disability studies\, and feminist theory\, and explain how they connect to healthcare design. I believe that interdisciplinary work is key to advancing equity issues in the design profession. Therefore\, I all designers can benefit from learning social science theory and applying it to our work\, and end users will benefit too. Whether you are interested in healthcare design specifically\, or interested in diversity issues in the design field in general\, this talk is for you.
