SUMMARY:Design Protection Section: Boosting Value for your Clients with Design Patents
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, design patents have become considerably stronger since the 2008 Supreme Court decision Egyptian Goddess. Yet many clients and ID professionals aren’t aware of what changed in that decision\, and how it affects the protection your clients can obtain with design patents. Join Patent Agent Kevin Prince\, who has obtained over 2\,500 design patents for his clients\, on this informative deep dive into design patents\, what they can now protect\, and how they can help your ID business and those of your clients. \nAbout the Presenter \nKevin Prince\, A/IDSA is a Registered US Patent Agent\, a UC Berkeley engineer\, author of The Art of the Patent (a coffee table art book featuring patent drawings)\, inventor\, and co-founder of Inventor’s Forum in 1990\, a non-profit inventors assistance group in Orange County\, CA. He specializes in design patents\, having obtained over 2\,400 design patents for his clients around the world. An inventor on five patents himself\, Kevin has had multiple successes in business\, most notably selling his portable computer accessories business to a public company in 2000. He is also the past president of Grid Art\, which manufactured a unique line of art supplies that can “turn anyone into an artist.” GridArt products have been featured on QVC\, and have been sold in at Michael’s\, Hobby Lobby\, and various catalogs.

SUMMARY:IDSA NYC: Conversations with James Howard
DESCRIPTION:IDSA NYC Chapter is excited to bring to you a riveting conversation with James Howard\, to honor\, recognize\, and explore his incredible career in the industrial design field. As we kick-off our events for 2023\, and celebrate Black History Month\, the event will open with a trailer of James’ movie\, ‘The Gathering’\, which highlights the story of other black designers\, and a short snippet of ‘The Black Inventors Hall of Fame’\, a virtual museum that showcases the groundbreaking inventions of African Americans\, where James operates as the Owner and Executive Director. \nIn this talk\, James will discuss his vast experience and inspirational journey through industrial design and his focus on achieving goals despite obstacles. James will also talk about the role that empathy\, optimism\, and services play in his work\, which focuses on the humane side of design\, and ranges the gamut from inventor and design practitioner\, to educator\, life coach\, and creative director. We are thrilled at the opportunity to share James’ story\, and his tremendous personal contributions to not just the industrial design field\, but also in centering the work and voices of other Black designers. We will be hosting the event virtually to make it available to the global design community.

SUMMARY:Blurred Lines 3.0 - IDSA CLE\, COL\, CIN
DESCRIPTION:IDSA Blurred Lines 3.0 | Industrial Design & Emerging Technology \nFrom integrating AI tools like Midjourney into ID practice to designing immersive spaces and products in Gravity sketch\, designers are taking advantage of new tools and software to augment their skillsets. Join us as we explore the tools of the designer at the cutting edge – how practicing industrial designers are integrating emerging technology into their everyday practice. \nIn this collaboration between IDSA Cleveland\, Columbus\, and Cincinnati you’ll hear from an exciting panel of designers and innovators from Kaleidoscope Innovation\, the Ohio State University\, Footwearology Lab\, and more! \nKedar Benjamin is an industrial designer whose obsession with AI and computational design has led him to create new workflows\, merging geometry processing and AI to explore ways to automate parts of the design process. One of his collaborations with AI is in the process of being readied for production using cutting-edge techniques. \nNicoline Van Enter is one of the founders of Footwearology and Footwearology Lab. She is a world-renowned technology forecaster and visionary thinker\, with a background in engineering\, journalism\, marketing and design. Nicoline has worked with brands such as Adidas\, Timberland\, Puma\, Ecco and various manufacturers and technology developers in the footwear industry. Her main focus and interest is in how AI will improve the design and manufacturing process\, for all parties involved. \nWilliam Nickley is Assistant Professor in the Department of Design at The Ohio State University. He holds an MFA in Design and a BSD in Industrial Design from The Ohio State University\, and brings over a decade of professional practice experience to the classroom. He researches social design practice as a member of the Ohio State DESIS Lab and teaches courses in the industrial design major. William’s research lies at the intersection of social design\, design methods\, and community-engaged design. \nNikko Van Stolk is a Lead Industrial Designer at Kaleidoscope Innovation\, an Infosys Company\, where he works creating collaborative spaces for robots and humans to thrive together. With a background in industrial design and a passion for human machine interaction\, Nikko creates empathetic solutions driven by user needs that embrace cutting edge technology. He enjoys walking a mile in someone else’s shoes through the user centered design process and applying his creativity in a way that improves quality of life.

SUMMARY:Miniaturization Redux - Materials & Processes Section
DESCRIPTION:John Skabardonis will guide participants through an interactive session\, exploring some of the latest functional integration technologies: \nThe cool electronics we love have traditionally been made possible by electromechanical components which can be bulky\, made of dissimilar materials and which have a significant carbon footprint. \nFunctional integration aims to transform these electromechanical components into thinner\, lighter\, more reliable and more environmentally friendly assemblies. \nSeamless\, curved\, smart surfaces\, previously considered simple enclosures which protected the electronics inside\, can now incorporate buttons\, switches and sliders\, lighting for visual communication\, or screens\, which are hidden until needed. \nIn addition to this\, infinite customization with regard to aesthetics and CMF is also integrated into these technologies. \nThese types of features\, will allow future electronics & IoT devices to become intelligent\, smaller and even more intuitive for users to interact with. \n<iframe src=”https://player.vimeo.com/video/769648462?h=19a86f9ec1″ width=”640″ height=”360″ frameborder=”0″ allow=”autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen></iframe>\n<p><a href="”https://vimeo.com/769648462″" data-wpel-link="internal">Miniature Redux</a> from <a href="”https://vimeo.com/user20604931″" data-wpel-link="internal">IDSA</a> on <a href="”https://vimeo.com”" data-wpel-link="internal">Vimeo</a>.</p>
