University of Oregon

Established in 2008, the University of Oregon’s Department of Product Design focuses on designing a better world. We offer degree programs in Eugene and Portland in learning communities renowned for academic excellence and innovative education. Dedicated to the principles of civic responsibility, environmental sustainability, international understanding, and cross-disciplinary education, we give our students the power to positively affect not just their own futures, but also the people, communities, and environments around them.

Program Description

In the UO’s Department of Product Design students learn to develop projects from a personal, local, and global perspective. They gain in-depth knowledge about materials, idea generation, prototyping, and manufacturing. The program integrates the theories and applied practices of art, architecture, and design disciplines, creating collaborative opportunities across campus with the business school and the anthropology and chemistry departments. Students finish the program with confidence and the skills to work for a company or start their own business. Students with an interest in being rigorous, critical, hands-on, mission-driven designers are perfect candidates for the BFA in product design.

The University of Oregon’s sports product design master’s degree program develops the next generation of innovation designers to inspire athletes around the world to play harder, run faster, and push the boundaries of their sport. This graduate program—located in Portland, Oregon, the world’s hub for the sports product design industry—focuses on innovation methodologies, materials and manufacturing, apparel, footwear and equipment design, human physiology, biomechanics, sustainability, and product branding and marketing. Design students use this knowledge to help athletes reduce the risk of injuries, maximize athletic performance, and address issues related to gender and diverse body types, including children and athletes with disabilities. See how students have pushed just some of those boundaries here.
