The presentation explores tangible and intangible, intrinsic and extrinsic motivators and rewards of the design/make process from historic and contemporary points of view. The author then seeks strategies and methodologies for teaching and discussing some of the less tangible intrinsic outcomes- developing a personal design philosophy and gaining spiritual and/or emotional benefit from the acts of designing and building- into a design curriculum. This is an early and ongoing research initiative and the author will share some initial results and continued strategies for upcoming lectures and studios.
