Design For Fostering Action-Oriented Awareness Towards Sustainable Transition
POST_Elena Huang-03

Addressing the imperative for sustainable transition necessitates widespread recognition of the intricate interplay between societal and ecological dynamics amidst the existential climate crisis, localized sustainable development initiatives, and the behavioral patterns of urban inhabitants. This paper advocates for a transformative approach centered on fostering actionable awareness through design interventions. Departing from conventional visual paradigms, the study endeavors to engender a deeper connection between audiences and novel conceptual frameworks. It introduces an integrated theoretical model tailored to local contextual challenges, the model comprises three tiers of design interventions: Design as narrative, catalyst and engagement. The model is exemplified by a comprehensive case study focused on the Rhode Island squid fishery. As both designer and practitioner, the author creates several tangible artifacts, including a visual mapping of the Rhode Island squid network, “Invisible Skin” – a garment crafted from squid fishery byproducts, and “Gladius” – a kitchen utensil designed for in-home squid processing. Through this multifaceted approach, the paper elucidates an alternative lens from the realm of design to address sustainability imperatives. The overarching aim is to counter prevailing disempowered public impression on the environmental crisis, and fostering enduring motivation and preparedness for embracing practical sustainable behaviors among the public.
