WID-SF began as a meetup group in 2013 by Ti Chang, IDSA with the support of IDSA. Over the next few years, Ti organized dozens of professional development events, designer showcases, and casual networking gatherings which built a community for female industrial designers in the Bay Area. In many ways this was an experiment in creating a city-based group as an off-shoot of an IDSA Section, which Women in Design was from 1992-2020. In time, WID-SF's momentum built as more women became involved with the group. Nichole Rouillac, IDSA assumed the leadership role of WID-SF In 2015 and established new initiatives such as a mentorship program and expanded reach to other related design disciplines. To capitalize on this growth, and because the Bay Area has such a concentration of design professionals, IDSA hosted its Women in Design Deep Dive here on May 3, 2019. Now formally under the WID Chapter network, we are excited to continue the WID-SF legacy and strengthen our support for women designers in San Francisco and surrounding areas.
