Ornamentation is a modus operandi for communication, for providing dimension, texture, pattern, depth and spirit. It is a way to liven up space, to create complementary conditions, to move the eye and break up surfaces, to bring illusion or entropy, to embellish and give richness to surfaces and materials and objects. Karim Rashid exploring computer graphics in the use of two- and three-dimensional decoration is the aim of this project by designer Karim Rashid.

This is an amazing volume. It's hard to beleive that a single industrial designer could apply an aesthetic hand to something as mundane as two styles of trash cans found in both suburban and urban yards to the five in one appliance precursor to the ubiquitous Cuisinart to the standby road trip diversion of the Viewmaster is mind blowing. And to think, when Mr. Harrison began his work at Sears in the early 1960's there was an unwritten policy that the company did not hire persons of African descent.

"In a sense this second issue of an annual publication is a more inportant milestone than the first. Publishing history indicates that, difficult as it may be to lanch a new publication, it is often more difficult to keep it going. Many "annuals" have appeared only once. The reception of the first U.S. Industrial Design has been gratifying, and has made possible this second issue. The scheme on which the book is compiled has not been changed.

Hoima Bicycle (DVD)

This documentary shows the process of designing a bicycle for and with Ugandan bicycle couriers, known as Boda-boda. Filmed primarily in Uganda, it shows the realities of current day East Africa, from the chaotic streets of Kampala to the inside of gritty mud-thatched homes in rural Hoima. In Uganda many residents use cheap, clunky bicycles for their primary means of transportation. Through a unique collaboration between an American designer and Ugandan couriers, a new bicycle design was conceived and a prototype was made.
