The Tesla Model S is a premium sedan built from the ground up as an electric vehicle. At the heart of Model S is the Tesla powertrain, delivering both unprecedented range and a thrilling drive experience. With a rigid body structure, nearly 50/50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity, the Model S offers the responsiveness and agility expected from the world’s best sports cars while providing the ride quality of a luxury performance sedan.
The challenge was to build not only the best electric car but the best sedan on the market. To begin with such a bold idea, designers had to completely reassess how cars have been built for the past 100 years. An electric vehicle that could challenge the internal combustion engine would need an impressive range, would have to accommodate a large battery, and would have to be extremely aerodynamic and efficient. The car also needed to be beautiful and safe and deliver a thrilling driving experience.
The architecture of a traditional car made these goals impossible. Battery placement in the front or rear would compromise weight distribution and, in turn, performance and efficiency. The architecture of Model S had to be designed entirely around the powertrain, with a battery pack flat under the floor like a skateboard and a motor and gearbox between the wheels.
The Model S combines pioneering technology with timeless elegance. It was designed to maximize range and efficiency—built of stamped aluminum and designed with exceptional aerodynamics. The Model S delivers unheard-of range up to 265 miles. The batteries use automotive-grade lithium-ion cells arranged for optimal energy density, thermal management and safety. The battery pack and powertrain components of the Model S lie flat in the floor, giving the vehicle excellent weight distribution and rigidity: Because of the position of the powertrain, Model S offers luxurious space, seating for five adults and two children and a second cargo area under the hood. The highlight of the cabin’s functionality is the 17-inch infotainment touchscreen with Internet capabilities, allowing for streaming radio, Web browsing and navigation.
Although a comfortably sized car, the Model S is agile, lightweight and lean, even with its generous storage capacity. “Uncompromised” is a key word used to describe Model S: environmentally friendly, extremely functional and very attractive. This is a vehicle every driver is proud to own regardless driving style, and one unnecessary of sacrifice.

The 787 Dreamliner features an expansive inner architecture as well as dynamic LED lighting that replicates day-to-night light patterns. In addition, it features dimmable windows 65 percent larger than the competition’s and larger stow bins. It has been one of the most successful commercial airplane launches in the history of aviation with more than 800 orders valued at $164 billion.
"Looking at the design driven research I believe design drove the process and innovations in this plane, again very brave to rethink a dramatic increase in window sizes, openness of space, and even enabling greater moisture levels in the cabin air to reduce dryness. Consider this with the massive reduction in assembly time combined with the 20% increase in fuel efficiency makes this a truly innovative design worthy of Gold." – Morten Warren, I/IDSA, Founder and Principal Creative, Native Design Ltd
