2022 marks the 42nd anniversary of the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), one of the longest running and most prestigious design awards programs in existence. Originally founded to recognize exceptional achievement in industrial design, the program has since grown to highlight design in many connected disciplines, including design strategy, branding, digital interaction, and so much more. Each year, thousands of entries are submitted by design teams across the globe, making IDEA one of the largest and most widely anticipated annual awards programs in the world.
IDEA set the benchmark for what a design award represents and has endured to become a career-defining catalyst for those talented enough to win.
IDEA is very fortunate for its ongoing partnership with The Henry Ford. Since 2010, winning IDEA products are entered into the permanent collection of the museum, where they remain ever-present symbols of ingenuity and mastery of craft. The Henry Ford name is synonymous with innovation and the pursuit of excellence. The museum welcomes over 1.7 million visitors per year and is a national historic landmark, with an unparalleled collection of artifacts spanning over 300 years of human ingenuity.

Tim Allen, IDSA was named one of Fast Company's Most Creative People in Business for 2017. He leads the global product design team at Airbnb, centered on design and inclusivity. His focus on fueling human potential is key to building products and cultures that inspire people to do their best work. As an additional outlet for his passion around design thinking, Tim speaks and instructs at schools and events around the country.
Tim’s work has been recognized with several of the industry’s most esteemed awards, including multiple Cannes Cyber Lions, D&AD, ANDY, Webby and OneShow awards. Named in the Creativity 50, Creativity magazine’s 2013 list of the year's most inspiring and influential creative figures, he also played a key role on the award-winning R/GA team who created Nike+, the platform named Campaign of the Decade by AdWeek magazine, Nike Training Club, Nike’s first ever iOS App, and Nike.com.
Prior to Airbnb, Tim led Microsoft's Experiences & Devices design practice and Amazon's Product Design Studio as Executive Creative Director leading the experience design for Echo, FireTV, and Kindle products. Tim also shaped the vision for one of the largest Experience Design teams in the United States at R/GA, whose Nike+ work established the future of connected experiences for brands. Through innovative work with Adobe, Red Hat, and IBM, Tim holds seven patents related to software design, ranging from chat interface modeling to mobile device synchronization.

IDEA recognizes products and services that encourage, inspire, and push our industry forward. We promote innovation and excellence. We encourage an in-depth and forward-thinking process. Ultimately, we honor great design that brings real benefit to users, clients, and society.
Each year, the jury reviews IDEA entries across 5 criteria. The same criteria have remained largely unchanged during the 40-plus year history of IDEA. We believe this consistency further separates the IDEA program from other awards programs.
Since its inception, the goal of IDEA has always remained to identify and honor the pinnacle of design excellence. IDEA is unweathered by shifting fads or transitory styling. Rather, its winners reveal the tremendous significance of design in business, society and beyond, thus proving that great results are possible when design is leveraged to its fullest potential.
Design Innovation - How new is the product or service? What critical problem is it solving? How clever is the solution? Does it advance a product category?
Benefit to User - How is the user’s life improved through this design? Can they accomplish things not previously possible?
Benefit to Client/Brand - What is the business impact of this design? How has leveraging design proven to be a key market differentiator?
Benefit to Society - Does the solution consider social and cultural factors? Is it designed/manufactured with sustainable methods/materials?
Appropriate Aesthetics - Does the form of the design adequately relate to its use/function? Are the colors/materials/finishes used befitting to its purpose?
