NCR has had a design department since the 1950s. In 1980, Arnold Wasserman, IDSA, was named Director of Corporate Industrial Design, and initiated comprehensive product design standards, over and above the usual graphic design corporate identity. Implemented in 1984 and titled, NCR Corporation Industrial Design Strategy, it included guidelines for consistent product character and relationships around the world. The project received an IDEA design award that same year. Mr. Wasserman and his design staff created the manual in collaboration with Richardson/Smith, Inc. Arnold Wasserman came from Chambersburg, PA and was a 1956 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to NCR, he held other landmark corporate design strategy positions at Xerox and Unisys. He holds many design and educational awards. A long-time contributor to education, and in 2003 was chairman of Idea Factory, Singapore, redesigning the educational system, media and design industries in Singapore. He teaches an interdisciplinary course on the "Post-Dilbert Workspace" at University of California, Berkeley's Haas Graduate School of Business.
