1985 Department of Architecture and Design, Museum of Modern Art
At its WORLDESIGN 85 annual conference, IDSA honored MoMA ,"for aiding in the understanding of good design by making visible the recent history of the well-designed object, especially through its new renovated and enlarged gallery, and for increasing the understanding of design excellence through exhibits such as Marcel Breuer and Alvar Aalto, and through bookstore and catalog promotions."

MoMA established the Department of Industrial Design in 1940, directed by Eliot Noyes, IDSA. For more on the biography and career of Mr. Noyes, see his bio on 100 Years of Design-A Chronology 1895-1995).

In 1946, Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. assumed the position as Director of the Department and initiated the national Good Design program from 1950 to 1955. In 1948, the Industrial Design Department was consolidated with the Department of Architecture and since 1955, Arthur Drexler headed the joint department after Kaufmann until 1988.
