1977 Armco Steel
At its annual conference in Lake Barkely, Kentucky, IDSA honored the company with an Award of Special Merit, "for its annual student design programs that each year invites four industrial design colleges and their students to study an area of human need and to then propose new, workable design answers to problems presented by these contemporary situations."

The company initiated the program in 1966, which continued through 1982, involving 900 students from 32 schools. Armco made available to IDSA a slide-show summary of the first 12-year results for use by design schools and IDSA chapters.
