2001 William Stumpf, IDSA (b. 1936)
At its annual conference in Boston, Massachusetts, IDSA honored Mr. Stumpf for his contributions to the profession, through his innovative design of ergonomically designed office chairs. He received a degree in industrial design at University of Illinois in 1959, and a Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1968. In 1973 he established a consulting practice, Stumpf Associates, in Winona, Minnesota and designed the 1976 Ergon chair for Herman Miller. He joined with Don Chadwick in 1977 to form Chadwick Stumpf and Associates and the result was the 1984 Equa chair and Ethospace System, both for Herman Miller.
