1986 Carroll Gantz,
FIDSA (b. 1931)
At its annual conference in Evanston, Illinois, IDSA honored Mr. Gantz
with its Personal Recognition Award for his 30 years of contributions
to the profession. During Gantz's 1979-1980 presidency of IDSA, he spearheaded
a transformation of the organization that nearly doubled membership and
chapters, initiated the IDEA national design awards, brought the Society
out of bankruptcy and championed by-laws to foster more democratic organizational
processes. Gantz was Director of Design at Black & Decker and was
the designer of the original B&D Dustbuster cordless vacuum cleaner
in 1978. From 1987 to 1992 he was Design Department Head at Carnegie Mellon
