William Bullock,
FIDSA
I just moved to the
University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign a year ago after serving 11
years as Director of the Georgia Tech ID Program in Atlanta. I am a tenured
Professor in industrial design in the School of Art and Design. It is
nice to be back in the midwest as I began my teaching career at the University
of Kansas. This an excellent opportunity for me to help build the program
with Chair Mark Arends. I work with graduate and undergraduate students
and had a good first year. Several of my undergraduate students received
a Gold IDEA award at the conference in Boston which was great.
I just received start-up
funding to direct a new Product Interaction Research Laboratory (PIRL).
The laboratory links business, design and technology resources at the
university to do funded studies for industry. This summer I went to Scotland
and Ireland with my sister which was nice as we have spend little time
together since I left the nest year ago. I highly recommend the trip for
anyone interested in gently rolling green hills with narrow roads and
few cars. The middle of Scotland is especially beautiful and relaxing.
The Mad Cows apparently scared some tourists away but I didn't see any
(mad cows). I have lunch occasionally with UIUC Emeritus Ed Zagorski who
as most of you know chaired the program here for many years. Ed lives
about 40 miles from campus and occasionally teaches part time. Classes
start here tomorrow so I am off and running.
Thanks for your response
concerning the family of Ray Spillman. Niels Diffrient told me at the
conference that he had given Ray an interview tape and related archival
material. Vicky Matranga says that Ray's work was archived at Syracuse
University. Question: At the IDSA Asilimar ( ?), California conference
years ago I met a white haired friendly professor living in a van on the
beach. He was quite cheery and invited me in for a cup of tea during my
morning jog. He taught at one of the California schools. I have forgotten
his name and was and what happened to him. Can anyone help?
(Note by Carroll
Gantz - Mystery was solved - the white-haired guy was Wayne Champion)
