Drawing and Sketching Workshop by Roland Brown

Friday, April 4th at 3:00 pm

We want attendees to understand various levels of design communication. We're talking sketching, sketch rendering and blowing it out all the way through presentation renderings. What makes water look like water or glass look like glass?  How do you show form and indicate materials and finishes and do it quickly? You had better sign up to find out ...

Here's the breakdown starting at 3pm:

Introduction + Theory (30min): Roland will begin by introducing to his work and follow up with a bit of general theory for rendering and illustration.

Breakout Session (30min): Students will sketch on their own for 30 minutes

Break (10min):

Sketch Rendering Session (30min): Roland will pick a few student sketches at random and show you how to make your own work pop.  No cookbook workshop content this year, folks.

Presentation Rendering Part 1 (30min): Roland will sketch out something, maybe an interior, maybe a product ... Roland will get it laid out and set up for rendering.

Break (10min):

Presentation Rendering Part 2 (30min): Roland will go through, step by step, and explain what he's doing as he's doing it, and render the image to presentation quality.

Drawing tools will not be supplied so PLEASE if you would like hands on training please bring some paper to sketch on and your favorite pen or pencil to draw with and let's get down to business.

Design Research Section

Sunday, April 6th at 11:00 am

Here's the full scoop on the Design Research focus, which will take place on the morning of Sunday, April 6th:

Presentations and Q & A (Starting around 9:45am): Conducting design research is essential, but how do you "design" the results of research? We've assembled a panel of professionals from industry and consulting to present the latest techniques in communicating design research. Speakers including Marty Gage (Lextant), Sunmee Kim (Motorola), and Art Swanson (Misys) will share their ideas and examples, followed by a question and answer session moderated by Rob Tannen (Bresslergroup).

Design Research Portfolio Review (around 11:00am): For the first time, IDSA is holding a portfolio review session specifically focused on design research. This is open to students and professionals interested in getting feedback and guidance on their design research work. This can range from observational studies to usability testing or anything else that applies. You'll get expert advice from design research professionals in an open, collaborative forum - so nothing confidential please. This will be a subsection of the general design portfolio review where, so you can get your work reviewed from both the design and research perspectives.
