Sooshin Choi is the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Design at College for Creative Studies. As a Chief Academic Officer at CCS, he is responsible for developing vision and leadership for all matters related to academic operations. Choi was a professor and the Director of School of Design at University of Cincinnati for 10 years prior to CCS.
He has studied industrial design in Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Hong Ik University, Royal College of Art, and the Ohio State University. He also has over 30 years of experience of professional design in the areas of automobile, system furniture, and innovative product at GM Korea, Kia Motors, Fursys, and DEKA R&D. His designs are awarded numerous prestigious design awards such as iF Hanover Product Design Award, iF Hanover Ecology Design Award, Japanese G-Mark, Grand Prize of Korean Industrial Design Award, IDEA. He holds over 50 design and utility patents from the designs of automobiles, furniture, transportation, and industrial equipment.
As a professor of design at University of Cincinnati from 2003 to 2013, Choi has taught various industrial design courses and conducted design research projects in collaboration with major corporations, such as P&G, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motors, Boeing, GE Appliances, Crown Equipment, and Mead Westvaco. Choi's research topics include inclusive design and design for innovation.
He has been a frequent writer and speaker on the topics of design, design innovation, and design education at a number of journals, conferences, universities, and corporations. He also has been invited to judge at a number of international design competitions such as Braun Prize, International Houseware Design Competition, India Design Award, Car of the Year, Car Design China Award, and IDEA 2015.
Professor Choi is a member of Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), has served as the Education Vice President (2012-2014) and the recipient of IDSA Educator of the Year 2014.
