Since 1971 Steve Belletire has been a design consultant working with international clients such as 3M, Black & Decker, and Whirlpool. As Vice-president of product development at consulting firm Joss Design-Chicago, he helped establish full product development services ranging from research through first article release.
For over twenty years at Joss Steve helped manage client needs and design teams in creating of hundreds of products for global markets. Since his 1997 appointment at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Professor Belletire’s research and consulting activities have focused on sustainable design and development. He has authored numerous articles and presented on sustainable design at corporate events and design conferences throughout the country. He has also conducted many workshops for corporate design teams including IBM, Northface, and Kohler and for university students, educators, and for design conference attendees.
Steve is one of three principle authors of Okala-A guide to ecological design, created for students and professionals. His current research centers on working with corporate new product development teams to help them integrate sustainable design principles and methodology within their unique, new product processes. A new 2013 edition focusing on design professionals is forthcoming. Another recent focus was the implementation of a symposium held at SIUC in April 2011 tilted Synergetics 2011: Where Innovation and Sustainability Meet. This event acknowledged the vision of former SIUC design faculty member (1959-1971) and 20th Century design icon, R. Buckminster Fuller by applying his global design tenants via 21st Century best team practices. The event was designed to help current innovators meet the needs of many without harming planet Earth.
