As an industrial designer I am also interested in sustainability. I believe it is a great opportunity to learn more about issues of sustainability and how they affect human condition on institutional, organizational, cultural, and technological levels locally and globally. Former Braun chief in design Dieter Rams upholds ten principles for good design, one of which strikes me as particularly relevant to the role of our profession in the modern society:
“Good design is environmentally-friendly. Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimizes physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.”
Combination of sustainability awareness and profession in industrial design, skills, knowledge, and experience are powerful tools which open the doors for a designer to make conscious choices when designing our Artificial World.
