Stephen Melamed, FIDSA, is president, International Society for Design Thinking (ISDT) based in Beijing, China; clinical professor, interdisciplinary product development (IPD) and ID at UIC; associate director, IPD at UIC Innovation Center; and founder and principal, PlusD2, Inc.

He began his studies in theoretical physics at Boston University and later received a master’s degree with distinction in ID from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He was an apprentice to Bauhaus designer/artist Werner Graeff; awarded a Design Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts; and studied with R. Buckminster Fuller for World Game. DesignIntelligence named Melamed One of the Most Admired Educators.

 

Sung Jang
Assistant Professor
University of Illinois at Chicago

Sung Jang earned a fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a master’s degree in design from Domus Academy in Italy. He began his design career at Samsung Design Milano then joined the faculty of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Designed Objects program.

Since 2013, Sung has served at the University of Illinois at Chicago's School of Design as an assistant professor and director of undergraduate studies in ID. He also serves as a partner in Article, LLC. Sung has worked with international brands such as Louis Vuitton, Artemide and Roche Bobois and been represented internationally at Venice Biennale, Design Miami, Victoria and Albert Museum, Chamber NYC and Art Institute of Chicago—among others.

 

Kimberlee Wilkins
Design Professor
University of Illinois at Chicago

Kimberlee Wilkens leads graduate and undergraduate courses at University of Illinois at Chicago in exploration of the design process, as well as adding depth and complexity to students’ thesis topics.

Wilkins co-teaches a Clinical Immersion Program, providing medical and bioengineering students with intensive exposure to the clinical environment in order to conduct human-centered research focusing on observation and needs assessment.  She also serves as industrial design lead and faculty for the UIC Innovation Center’s UR*lab. In 2016, she launched 5by5 design lab.
