Vision, Mission and Strategic Business Plan

In 2009 the IDSA Board of Directors formulated a new three-year Strategic Plan for the development of the Association with the help of Steve Sato of Sato and Partners. In this plan many programs that were adding little value for members were cut and the focus was shifted to developing membership value through 4 Keystone programs: Content, Social Media, Partnerships and Membership Development.

The Vision and Mission of IDSA were not changed, but a Strategic Intent section to translate the Vision and Mission into actions was added.

Vision Statement
As a key voice of the profession, IDSA advances the positive impact of design on business and society while directly benefiting members by evolving into the world's most effective design organization.

Mission Statement

  1. Promote the benefits, awareness and value of design in business and society
  2. Assist the advancement of our members throughout their careers
  3. Facilitate design quality through professional development and education
  4. Create a vital and expanding global design community
  5. Provide access to information most relevant to the design profession
  6. Pursue continual improvements to IDSA

Strategic Intent (how to deliver on the Mission):

  1. Deliver valued compelling content,
  2. To connect members with members, business, experts and information and
  3. To strengthen the brand, structure and operations of the Association.

The Board determined that the association could achieve the strategic intent by:

  1. Leading a design driven culture – making design a competitive advantage for an individual
  2. Fostering excellence in design education –building the individuals career
  3. Promoting design – helping business prosper through design
  4. Managing and growing the association – creating a sustainable association
