Steven R. Umbach

Steven R. Umbach, IDSA | At-Large Director | Umbach Consulting Group

During Steven's design career he has worked as a designer in consulting firms and as a design department senior director in corporations.  Currently, as a design consultant, he assists corporations and entrepreneurs with product design, design processes and strategy and design communications.  Steven is also a part-time design educator with the University of Houston.  His journey as a designer has taken him around the country and the world and along the way he has earned a master's in management with a focus on design management because he wanted to better bridge the design and business worlds.

He joined IDSA in 1981, a year after graduating from R.I.S.D.  Having noticed the energy and renewed direction IDSA is embarking on Steven said he wanted to contribute to that effort by working with the IDSA Board Members on special projects. Steven joins the IDSA Board of Directors as an At-Large Director and looks forward to exciting new directions for IDSA!

IDSA Involvement:

Multiple IDEA award wins, Best Design of the Decade winner, Published in Innovation, Design Intelligence, Design Management Journal and recently as case study researcher and writer for Catalyst and the book Deconstructing Product Design.  Served as IDSA chapter chair, vice chair, treasurer and IDSA national and regional conference committee organizer.
