IDSA Patrons of Industrial Design Excellence Program

Patron1
Patron2

In the past the Patrons Program has supported IDSA's communications program, helping to improve the quality of its media, publications and student outreach. These programs have given industrial design an eloquent voice and a solid information base over the past decade. We now believe it is time to expand the program and introduce clearer deliverables and goals to become even more effective.

The Patrons Program’s objective to support the industrial design profession has not changed; however we have added specific goals for the program. These goals have been aligned with the member’s needs and requests to develop and improve the role of industrial design in the global economy as reported in the 2009 member satisfaction survey. In this survey, more than half the members asked IDSA to improve the understanding of the role of the industrial designer in society, make the case for design thinking and build a stronger demand for design in the future.

For 2011 the Patrons Program will focus on many activities including those connected with developing the following four content programs in order to improve the role and prospects of industrial design in society:

1.    Awareness: Produce a set of materials that will explain industrial design and design thinking to kids K through 12 and start the process of distributing it in the school systems throughout the U.S. The goal would be to have every student who leaves the school system aware of the value that industrial design adds to business and society.

2.    Understanding: Fund the development more Catalyst Case studies. Following the revamping of the Catalyst Program by Ravi Sahwney and the RKS team in 2009, we now have a program that is documenting the value that design brings to the business world. Design is vital to all aspects of our lives. These case studies reveal the importance of industrial design by bringing depth, clarity and transparency to the profession. This concrete body of evidence will instill into the collective consciousness design’s power to affect positive change and thus strengthen the role and demand for industrial design.

3.    Interest: Expand the content and inspirational storytelling about industrial design in the “What is Industrial Design?” part of the website. This is a popular destination for non-design visitors as well as students to the site.

4.    Professionalism: Help seed the continuing education program to support professional growth and make industrial designers more marketable throughout their careers. This program will start by focusing on nurturing our young professionals coming into the workplace.

Members of the Patrons Program make the commitment to become a Patron because they want to help grow the role and value of industrial design to business. As a Patron, companies formalize their support, gaining recognition for their contributions and making those contributions to allow both the Patrons and IDSA to plan ahead. In exchange for an annual contribution, Patrons will receive valuable exposure for their company's industrial design-related activities, along with useful discounts.  Specifically:

As a Patron you will receive top visibility in the Society including:

  • Listing as a Society expert on the media page of the website
  • A welcome to the program in IDSA's monthly Member Newsletter
  • Recognition in Innovation, the quarterly journal for industrial designers
  • Invitations to participate from time to time in IDSA’s podcasts with your fellow Patrons on design trends, the future of design and/or other issues.  These podcasts will be linked to iTunes and publicized on the website, which will give you increased visibility
  • Use of an IDSA logo developed specifically for Patrons. Once your company has become a Patron, the IDSA Patron logo may be used on your stationery and in brochures, marketing presentations and advertising.

How to Become a Patron:
